Were creeping up on the dates of release and I think I'm gonna go with the big N. Anybody else looking forward to the big releases or is it just me.

I've bought a SNES and N64 and have played on the GBA & GBC & GB, further I've used multiple consoles from Sega and even touched a PSX once

MS is a newcomer to the console market, is totally unexperienced and is thus more likely to screw up. Besides, I don't mind saving some money on a console ($299 vs. $199) and really want to try the new Zelda to see whether it's indeed improved.

The GameCube, thus

I'll stick with my PS2 unless there's something really convincing.

Those who slate nintendo for producing kids games are missing the point. Nintendo see games as toys and hence there will always be something child-like about most of their products. Who gives a...

They're packed full of playability and fun. That's what counts, and what makes nintendo-made games so good.

Xbox is a mini-PC with custom hardware. Non-upgradeable. I reckon it'll do okay, but it won't steal thunder from GameCube. Or it shouldn't

Get an XBOX first, and then when you can afford it, get a Gamecube.

XBOX=Geforce3 PC with Microsoft software that doesn't crash? Yay!
I sure within a few weeks after the launch, someone will successfully hack it into a cheap pc with an awesome graphics card. Think about it.

Gamecube=Zelda. No more needs to be said. Have you seen the screen shots for it? Awesome.

Only thing that sucks about these newer consoles is that there may never be any way to emulate them on the PC(Maybe the XBOX, but I'm sure they're taking steps to prevent that).

That is, unless you already have a Geforce 3 PC.

I think some xbox games will get ported over, and I think we should take a wait and see approach.

I installed Linux on an Xbox already. Mwahaha! In my Dev kit there is a cable coming out of the back. If you can make an adapter for it you can plug it into your USB port and you can change/upgrade the firmware. But I tried Linux and it worked fine. The real Xbox's won't have that cable but they still have a plug inside of it so you can do that. I am buying a GCN though.

<< Only thing that sucks about these newer consoles is that there may never be any way to emulate them on the PC(Maybe the XBOX, but I'm sure they're taking steps to prevent that). >>

The GC has a 128-bit CPU, the XBox has a slightly modified (128 kb L2 instead of 256 kb) P3 CPU.

Add to that the fact that all parts of the GC are custom designed for that single console while the XBox uses only (again, slightly modified) PC-parts.

What this means is that the XBox can be emulated easily since it's just a modified PC, while the GC's 128-bit CPU and memory (SDRAM (?) and 1T-SRAM) will make it extremely hard to emulate this console, just like N64 emulators are still far from perfect and require a fast PC (600+ MHz, 128 MB RAM is a nice start) to run any games (as far as they work).

The only problem I see with emulating the XBox is the size of the games, especially if they come on multiple discs and/or DVD, but there's nothing some software and a CD/DVD writer can't fix

Even if xbox games can be emulated, you're forgetting a couple things.

The xbox is designed to run games, nothing else. There is no Windows OS or anything else taking up system resources. Also, the games run in 640x480. We all know that 640x480 looks like crap on a PC. You'd want 1024x768 at least, and I am thinking that even with a more powerful PC you wouldn't be able to emulate it very well. If you could, why don't they make games this good looking on the PC? That video of that racing game is pretty f'n amazing but no PC games come close to it..

Probably a Cube. I just want plain fun games.

Already got a nice DVD player and I'm getting a new PC in the spring. I'd much rather play serious FPS games on a PC.

You're forgetting about the stripped Win2k kernel, running in the background, taking up some of the limited resources.

It does? Then why do so many people play CS etc. at that resolution?

Which rock did you crawl under from? IMHO current games are looking pretty good.

BTW, don't forget that the XBox does not have a 1.x GHz CPU, less than 128 MB RAM and its videocard can not be updated. Just wait till you've seen what the Geforce 4 and 5 can do

All with all, I see very few problems with emulating an XBox.

I know it wouldn't be that hard to emulate games on a PC, but playing a game that is simple to set up, in your lounge room with some friends, fatty food and beer(or juice for some ) is hard to do on a PC. You can't get that lounging around feeling in front of a PC. That's what I like about consoles. So having said that, the only difference is which has the better games. At the moment you'd have to favour the Xbox. Damn that car game looks fun!

XBOX -

Man, am I the only one tired of Mario and the gang?

Metroid will be cool, but overall, Nintendo hasn't been too stellar lately. The N64 was a piece of crap for the most part. Granted, it had a few titles worth buying, but I'd say most people would have rather had the playstation and the vast library it amassed.

The new Zelda looks cool, but so does Halo. Name any game on any of the platforms, and the others will have an exclusive that is just as good.

Anyone ever given thought to the maintenance routines that are going to be in the XBOX? I would imagine after a few months of saving games, ripping music, and storing game info for faster loading, the HD would frag pretty bad. I suppose it will be a middle of the night kind of thing.
