GameCube problem thread: What are your experiences? (Thread re-created)

OK, so the GameCube has been out a day now. Has anyone encountered any problems? Lock-ups, defects, or even Rip-offs? Not that I'm picking on it or anything (I'm sure the X-Box will have WAY more problems); it's my fave of all next-gen systems, but I'm sure there are some problems to be worked out.

I've experienced these hardware/software problems with Rogue Leader:
Lockup during cinema scene in the second "nebula" level
Inability to throttle up in the training stage. Is it a bug, or am I not doing something right? I can't speed up during the "press lightly to speed up" training segment either! It just times out.

And this rip-off:
Electronics Botique charges you far more than the cost of all the extra stuff you don't want already when you reserve the GameCube bundle so it's already a rip-off, but I specifically asked when/how I was supposed to pick up my "Game Over" novel & magazine subscription while I was reserving it & they told me to get them when I pick up the system (Nov 18th, yesterday). When I arrived, they told me I was supposed to get it then & that I couldn't have one of the "inventoried" copies. Oh well, I wasn't interested in buying that book in the first place but that just means they took my $80 extra & didn't give me squat (Technically, their just "bonuses" anyway). I still plan on bitching EB's CS number out even though I told the store guys I didn't care (Maybe they'll refund me the added cost!).
Also, everything was brought in from the back in a big bag with my tel number on it. Everything was thrown in (As should the previous items but they weren't) & all the plastic packages punctured the heavy console's box. All preorders were handled like this therefore any collector that would reserve his (Which "collector" wouldn't?) would have a destroyed box like me. Eh, I'll just find some kid with one for Christmas that doesn't want his box.

I hope this isn't considered off-topic because it's GC hardware, but I'm just hoping to start a more technical thread here (All the related boards on other sites seem dead or full of poke-lamers anyway)...

I dont know if you or anyone else on here visits the Amazon discussion boards, large amounts of people out for blood (myself included) trying to figure out why the cubes haven't left the warehouses yet according to tracking info we have. So I'd share my cube info...if I had my cube...

EBWORLD (Online version of Electronics Botique) customers got theirs EARLY, and they got a brand-name 2nd controller & were only forced to buy 2 games...

Too bad they were only offered for 18 mins, similar to Amazon/Toys R Us...

Yeah, i think amazon's total order time between all the pre-orders was 18 minutes (2 here, 5 there...)

but I still don't trust EBWorld after it took them 2 weeks past the launch to get my PS2 to me...

Perhaps that's why they shipped early. Nintendo actually encouraged all retailers to sell on arrival due to the GC delay making it's release after the X-Box but EB's in-store walk-in customers couldn't get them due to MS reps bullying retailers (See www.vg-network.com about that...)

I've seen a lot of reports about problems with Rogue Leader, some people think its a disk problem(a la DC launch) or something wrong with the laser in the unit(a la PS1).

I'm lookin' for those reports! Where'd you hear anything?
I've now encountered SERIOUS performance problems in the training stage that I know wouldn't be acceptible in the final code (frame rate drops for a constant steady & certainly not smooth 8FPS!). I noticed Rogue Leader was packaged differently than the others. It's label slightly overlaps the sides of the DVD container & it's wrapping was regular shrink-wrap with a seal-line while the others have the "folded seal" corners of a CD jewl case's wrapping. Also, the US version of RSII:Rogue Leader was on sale at IMPORT shops 2 weeks ago! Perhaps it was finished & manufactured early therefore differently. Even then, you'd think all this would have been worked out w/ the Japanese release (I bought the Jap unit early & I'm saving it, US modded of course, for the Christmas "buy-off" to make a little cash). The DVD style cases are way different, but I'm sure the disc are manufacturered the same way.

I have had some problems with Rogue Leader also. In the asteroid scene, I basically can't move in 3D, just point in different directions (maybe this is the game). In the second part of this level, the targeting computer turns on and won't turn off sometimes, and other times it displays a weird structure in the middle of the screen. That's all I can think of right now.

It sounds like the game is buggy. Too bad it can't be patched. Haha suckers...

Rogue Leader keeps locking up on me. I don't know if it's the game or the Cube, but it sucks!

I haven't played it enough to know if it keeps locking up but was your lockup similar to mine? ie, it locks when changing scenes or loading something. It was a very smooth lockup on mine, it just faded to black like a movie finishing & never loaded what was next. You can earn a targeting computer powerup that allows you to toggle it on & off. Could that be it? Could you be earning it in that level & just not finishing/saving so that it seems intermittent? My friend and I have only reached that level & haven't noticed anything, but I haven't played that far myself (Too busy working on these damn PCs) to know about it...

I did figure out that in the training stage (Heh heh, everything's about RSII:RL huh?!), the problem I was having was genuine. There is a test for speed throttleing & another for boosting. Despite the fact that the craft doesn't seem to respond to throttleing at all, you are still able pass the test by using the throttle (Analog/clicking R lever). My problem was that despite using the throttle, it would just time-out & fail the test (When the analog button is simply pulled, clicked, or not, it refused to "pass"). This happened repeatedly even when exiting & restarting the level. After playing a different game the trying again it worked every time by simply pulling the R button, even if you clicked to boost (Even though boosting is a different test)! I may have deleted the save but I'm not sure, & I didn't experiment enough to know if resetting the system fixes it or not but if it happens again I certainly will...

i dunno about rogue leader, but i played THPS3 for around 6-7 hours straight yesterday and 4 hours straight today and it has been perfect, no bugs, no slowdowns, etc. great game, i love it

now to wait for SSBM....

Heh, I haven't put that much time into my GCN becuase my friends won't stop making me drag it around everywhere to show their friends/family (I guess they all want one for you know what). Anyway, as you can probably tell, this is just a bump No new info to add...

I have had no problem with my GC. Or Rogue Leader 2Works like a Charm. Also no Problems with Batman: Vengeance or Luigi?s Mansion. In short My GC and GC games Work great. Maybe that there are different Versions of Rogue Leader (any way to find this out?)

Popoco: Keep in mind, none of these flaws are immediately apparent! I've only experienced the game locking up once, and with your substantially increased game library over mine, it's doubtfull that you've played RSII as long as I've been watching everyone here play it (Or else you wouldn't have seen Batman at all )... Heh heh, we're just "nitpicking" anyway! Maybe you or we will uncover something serious, so keep an eye and ear out & report back if you see anything...

I bought my Cube on Sunday, and played Rogue Leader for about 3 hours without a problem that night. Last night is when the problems started, so don't dismiss it before you've spent some time with it. It seems to be mainly in the asteroid level. As far as the toggle powerup, I don't think that is it, because when it gets "stuck" then none of the targets show up anymore. Maybe just bad code. Other than that, it looks fantastic. (And nothing is cooler than flying between the legs of an AT-AT!)

OK, I experienced vetteguy's "wierd structures" problem. It looks like a corrupted texture gets applied over your targetting computer making it entirely useless (I guess the "highlights" are an overlaid texture because they simply aren't there w/ the targetting computer glitch). It is obviously textures from other parts of memory because you can sometimes see explosions & other special effects animated inside the obscurring artifact.

Uh, that's a "feature" not a bug, you're supposed to use 'the force' for that part. Obi wan says so.

Heh, I think that's what the idea behind the "Targeting Computer Acurracy" rating is meant for (you get a better rating for not using it & you can't use it if you want a gold medal).

Anyway, a new bug:

Seen twice, usually when destroying an enemy a ground troop will "levitate" at ship-height & you can fly right through it.

I still haven't been playing through the other games

i played the death star stage... never got past that, and i didn't have any problems so far. but super monkeyball is one nice multiplayer game. kinda reminded me of mario party.

Hmmm.... No problems with my GC and no problems with any of my games (Rouge Leader, Wave Race, or Luigi).

Should I consider myself lucky? Probably not. I haven't heard any problems like these anywhere else. At the major retail chain I work at we have had no returns/exchanges on the Game Cube itself (160 systems sold) nor any games or accessories. I also seriously doubt they'd let major bugs as some of you describe slip through on the systems launch.

Maybe you guys just got some bad apples?


Regardless, I'm going to go sit back down and finish through Luigi's Mansion. Then it's off to Rouge Leader...
