Ah, I see. I was not aware of this interview. Good post.
What I find interesting is the almost Apple like thinking of Koduri in the sense that RTG has a long term mission of bringing graphics indistinguishable from reality to the computer/display world. They are throwing out the old ways of thinking with regards to how you set successive annual/generation targets. Nvidia is still very much the competitor but they have an overall target which would still exist even in the absence of any competition.

As he also said in the interview.

"When I set the goal, I said, “We need to get here in our lifetime.” We can’t do that with Moore’s law and hardware alone. We have to unleash software on this problem. We’ve been working with developers on all of these ideas. How can we get 16K by 16K displays refreshing at 240Hz with the picture that you want to draw?"

Not currently the time to buy any gpu if a person can wait another couple months.

Having lower expectations as far as perf/$ isn't a bad thing in the end. Leaves little to no room for disappointment and lot's of room for wow, holly molly, etc.

You won't be seeing me complain about a huge performance leap without a price increase.
Agreed, bad time to buy. Too bad mine stopped working 3 weeks ago. I'm definitely waiting a few months, so integrated for a while.

These bench results will be the new mid range card levels.

According to some on this forum, 4K is irrelevant, even 1440p is. We should all care about 1080p 60Hz since "98% of PC gamers" game at or below that resolution.

16K displays? 4K 120Hz? 1440/4K HDR? Pfff. $1400 Big Pascal SLI for 21-24" 1080p TN 60Hz. Take it and love it.

Wait! If Polaris struggles at HiRes vs nVidia because of bandwidth (Small bus and no hitech memory available) 1080p will only be important to the peons.

Amazing whats coming. Have 27" 1440p now and looking forward to HDR 4K next year. Remember when people dreamed of getting a 21" trinitron tube monitor.
I consider monitors, speakers/headphones and mouse/keyboard (all the human interface parts) as essential to a good experience.

Quite true. At least, to AMD's benefit, there are many more peons than elites.

I remember when I bought Phillips brilliance 202P and watched first HD clips available. Priceless.
Anyway, I see Polaris as only viable upgrade for me in $200 range.

The issue with having Polaris 10 come in at Fury X perf but no more than $300 is that it will cannibalize sales of their products. Unless they plan on releasing Vega shortly after a Fury X-equivalent P10, I don't see how this will play out. If Polaris 10 is indeed as fast as a Fury X, it will probably come in at $400+ but I think most of us will recognize that AMD will be milking a sub-250 mm^2 die at that point.

I think Fury is DOA. Especially now there's the new Firepro for HPC that wants ~13.5 TFlops in 300W (better than anything else by far), or Fury Duo Pro for VR content producers. All the Fiji dies go into these products.

Fury line needs to die because it's non-competitive outside of Nano.

Vega could be launched in Q4 2016. Amkor/eSilicon have said there's a 14nm FF + HBM2 chip which they are working on ready for production in September this year.

So there's a 3 month gap where AMD has to get rid of all current Fury, major price drop to clear stock.

Come out with a driver/BIOS that improves mining on Fiji cards... Done! All gone almost overnight. No discounting required, either.

I don't think that's possible. Front-end bottlenecked badly. Hawaii front-end + 50% extra shaders and all that. Bit mining is a high throughput mono-workload that drivers can't hide utilization issues well.

You can optimize anything. Miners are using older drivers because they are faster and they are always tweaking settings that could be accomplished by AMD within the BIOS.

Yep. Probably much easier to fully optimize the bios/drivers with a single task in mind.

Eventually that level of performance will come at a point in the stack where it's priced as a reasonable match for 1080. 1080 is a lot more realistic as a comparison for the second to bottom card on the stack although I'm hoping that it's bringing 1440 performance down a bit farther on the stack. Still, today's 1440 performance is one or two years from now's 1080 performance.

The issue with GSync is NV ecosystem which means paying hundreds of dollars more every GPU upgrade ($280 290X vs. $550 980, $400 290 vs. $650 780, $300 280X vs. $450 770 4GB). Then add the huge premiums for GSync over FreeSync. Also, GSync is MIA for large (>32") 4K monitors. It's not as clear cut as you make it. Once we go down market, it gets even worse -- GSync isn't even on the map. There are new AOC and ViewSonic FreeSync monitors at affordable prices. GSync is MIA in those market segments.

It also hasn't been conclusively proven scientifically that GSync is actually superior to FreeSync. They both have their pros and cons.

Linus TechTips:

My Gsync monitor is faulty and will be going back to Amazon. As much as i hate Nvidia pricing i hate AMD drivers worse. I also like shadowplay and gsync has worked flawlessly since i got it and my Swift has been amazing to play on.

AMD have yet to show me their top end GPU can beat the 980ti consistently and i have had the 980ti since launch. What choice do we have now when SLI is totally broken other than flagship gpu?

warning cringe worty (1000%) making linus a politically correct reviewer

Not much of a game selection tested it looks like too me at least.

We included results from eight games, some newer and some slightly older: Batman: Arkham Origins, Fallout 4, GTAV, Hitman: Absolution, Metro: Last Light, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2013, and The Witcher 3

It's always amazing how you guys can go back and forth, back and forth, thread over thread over who can guess more convincingly.
