While they have the same methods and goals, there is an important key distinction between Thompson and Sarkeesian that you are missing. Thompson was a religious republican and thus garnered no sympathy or support from the liberal mainstream media. Sarkeesian is a leftist feminist making full use of Saul Alinsky tactics and has the media on her side.
