People are messed up, and considering there are over a billion gamers, you will have messed up gamers. We already agreed that games dont make people do anything. So what in games needs to change?
I don't think anything necessarily needs to be changed as I never really cared much about that issue.
If it were ever about 'ethics in gaming journalism' I would say two things:
1. As Stephen Colbert put it, there is a cozy relationship between entertainment media and content producers in TV, movies, etc. Everyone knows this, nobody cares. It's not unique or interesting.
2. It's hard to think of something I care less about than that issue, and the level of freakout over it is hilariously unwarranted.
What needs to change is the attitudes of the gamergate people, as holy shit they are insane.
I will agree that people have gone too far, but I suppose you could say that about every issue ever in all of history. Why is it so terrible that people have done that with this issue?
I could see calling out those individuals who say/do horrible things, but I dont get why the label of gaming is meaningful. I dont see people calling out the horrible things water drinkers do, as it is equally as relevant to both of us.
In a way, I am a gamergate person, so far as I do think the content reviewers should be as close to the content creates. As you already pointed out, its no different than any other media content. There is something there, but I think we both agree its very very small.
I think the main thing I have not liked, is the labels that gamers are being given. Its where the notyourshield thing started.
