I'll be honest, that's the most succinct explanation in this entire f-story of a thread. That being said I also believe you're giving certain people credit for having more power than they actually do.
Nowadays you're probably right. When I first got involved in GamerGate around March 2015, things were a lot different. It seemed like the anti-GG/SJW crowd was creating a new fake controversy each week and literally attacking game developers, demanding they remove offensive content from games.
Nowadays they've largely retreated back to games journalism and still publish ridiculous articles about everything is sexist/racist/blah-blah-blah. They don't have the momentum to get their hashtags trending or to pose the same level of threat that they once did. They are still fucking up the localization of Japanese games though, as we saw with Toyko Mirage and Fire Emblem Fates though.
