I would think it obvious that whatever display shortcomings they may have are being overcome by the small footprint, low power consumption, lack of heat, flat panel, crisp text, complete lack of flicker, and the way they mystify gamers who haven't bought one yet.

Gamers who use 6800s and X800s... why? How could you deal with the 80fps (or whatever number thrown in) limitation?
Gamers who play PS2 and XBox? how could you deal with the tv resolution?
Drivers who drive a car with a non-turbo 4 cylinder engine? how could you deal with the weak acceleration?
And I wonder how could our ancestors have survived without a PC...
life is deep.

Despite claims of under 10ms response times and what have you, every LCD monitor out there simply cannot handle graphic intense games, especially first person shooters. Ghosting and tearing plague LCDs, no matter how fast they are. Yet gamers are buying them in droves.

So my question is, why do gamers buy them? Are you saying you don't experience the symptoms I mentioned above...or do you just ignore them, pretend it isn't happening, or do you have really bad eyesight? I say this kind of facetiously, but I'm really curious because I (as well as friends) have tested supposedly some of the fastest LCDs out there, and no matter how much I want to like them, the ghosting and tearing keep me away.

Also, How do you cope with having only one resolution that is native to the monitor? For text, if you take an LCD out of its native resolution, it looks like crap. So how do you deal with this when it comes to games that won't run in your LCD's native resolution (for whatever reason)?

I think you must be related to the guy that still insists we learn DOS at college.

Hey i just went from a 19 inch viewsonic E90FB to a new acer 1914 lcd. Let me tell ya, there is a difference in quality, space saving, gaming, and just all around good use. This thing doesnt ghost at all. I have no dead pixels. I dont see any tearing at all. I love it. My crt was awesome too, but it doesnt compare to my lcd. I wouldnt go back if ya paid me.

Do yourself a favor, and go check out a good lcd on a good pc. Not some lame junk on a junk pc. I guarantee you will change your mind.

I use a 20" dell widesscreen and a 19" Samsung normal. When I first got an LCD I thought omg this looks pretty awful. (I had a Sony 19" Trinitron before). However after a couple of days my eyes had adjusted to what the monitor showed.

And the Dell LCD is superb in every aspect. Far better than using a CRT.

Oh and if I were to have 2 large CRTs then my desk would almost certainly collapse.

I'll attest to that. RPGs are nicer on LCDs.

Ribbon, under normal circumstances I wouldnt disagree with you, but could you please explain to me how viewing a 37" across the room is better than sitting right in front of a 19"? Especially when I'm using a keyboard and mouse?

Oh, and you are absolutely right about the 24" sony CRT. Didnt that bad boy normally cost 800 bucks?
Its the only monitor I know that will play my Baldurs Gate 2 at Max resolution. (2048x1536)

EDIT:
I think many people here may already know I am a hardcore CRT lover, especially for games. But after reading
http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2467
I may just go ahead and move over to LCD's. Its getting to the point where all the little benefits of having a CRT are slowly drifting away. I'll probably make a firm decision after the New Year.
24" CRT for $479 or $1000 23" LCD?
Both are top of the line. The real question is: Which one do I want in my office?
(By the way, that 100 pound CRT has FREE shipping.)

Funny. I suppose I should have jumped on the BETA bandwagon when it came out because it was the hot new technology also.

I love my Mitsubishi 19" AG CRT, but when it dies I'm going LCD or some other competing technology(don't expect it to die for a few more years). Size, weight, and much improved display quality are the reasons I'll finally leave CRTs behind.

That said, if my CRT survives until my death, so be it. Just bury me with it and my Voodoo 5 5500!

Have you seen that paragraph that demonstrates how the brain can read words just fine even if they are jumbled? The whole paragraph has each word jumbled up, but because the first and last letter are correct, you can read it just fine. I believe the same thing happens with the whole "ghosting" and "tearing". The affect is so minimal that our brains simply cope with it. I have had zero problems on my LCD(8ms). FPS is my favorite genre of gaming, and you better believe I was afraid of what would happen when I made the switch. So far it's been just fine.

Having one resolution didn't bother me, I never played on higher than the native resolution my LCD supports. Anything higher taxes the system more, and I never saw an increase in quality, just a decrease in performance. This is the perfect resolution balance for me, so it all works out. Although I do wish more things supported 1280x1024. Some games still do not support this very common res. In most cases you can force it though, so it hasn't been a serious issue.

I would never want to go back to CRT. They are simply too large.

I can't imagine gaming without superbright at this point. Anything less would be a massive letdown.

Multiple useable resolutions and better color precision are two other reasons I'm sticking with my CRT for now. Also, CRTs are harder to steal because of their size and weight... and that has become a big concern for me.

People that whine about ghosting with modern LCDs are most likely only doing so BECAUSE its an LCD. I'm rockin a year old Samsung 193P here, its 20 ms, but I notice NO GHOSTING whatsoever in Battlefield 2, UT2004 (which is a very fast paced game, best test for ghosting), and then Halo PC while firing the plasma rifle (AT actually used that as a ghosting test once). I can however notice EXTREME ghosting on my sister's Sony SDM-73B, a 16 ms monitor. If you showed me a Corvette, and a Daewoo that claimed 500 HP, guess what I'd take? If you do even an ounce of research before buying an LCD, ghosting shouldn't be an issue. As far as not running in native res, well if your game won't run in 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, then I guess its time to get that 7800GT.

I have the viewsonic 19" LCD vx924 , its 4 ms and i see NO ghosting i play BF2, cs source and even in need for speed most wanted there is 0 ghosting. before i had a 22" viewsonic p220f, good monitor, but HUGE. i saved a ton of space on my desk. plus the 22" crt was only 20" viewable, my 19" lcd is 19" viewable, and looks just about the same size. Native resolution does not bother me 1280x1024 is perfect for every game. LCD's are also sharper then CRTS.

I'm in between hardcore and average gamer, (I play almost every night, bf2) and I love my 2005 for gaming.. racing, FPS, RTS, you name it, it's great for it.

I've never had a problem playing any games with the LCD... (response time wise, etc)

Exactly.. Dont know what youre doing wrong, but ive never witnessed ghosting, not even on my first LCD which was a Dell FP2001..

Next time instead of acting arrogant and a know it all, do your research.

This guy is a complete n00b sorry to say what your refering to is motion blur not ghosting. evert lcd i have tried has ghosting everyone i will not lie but its not going to effect your gaming performance. I would rather trade motion blur one native res for perfect geometry, flat panel, weights 20 pounds at like most and my eyes. I would never buy a cheap lcd they are terrible i am on a 15'' compaq lcd my aunts and its truely terrible but for writing text i guess its good for them even for me writing text and everyday use i couldnt deal with it.

I"ve had my pair of Hitachi 17" LCD's for at least a year and a half now. I've had no ghosting or any other problems with any games. I had a 20" CRT prior to the LCD's and the thing weighed so much it actualy bent my computer desk.

Is this supposed to make sense? In one sentence I'm a noob and what I'm referring to is motion blur not ghosting, and in the next sentence you agree with my statement and say all the LCDs you've tried have ghosting?

I felt it was just time to let go, I'm working with a very small ..table space and the table s a folding table made out of some sort of plastic aluminum alloy (very cheap). To top it off I plan to take this baby with me every other week or so for a small lanparty with some of my friends. It's just a lot more simpler and easier to transport a 17" lcd than the 19" CRT I was going to get that would eventually break my table. I'm actually going to be the first of my friends to switch to LCD after years of CRT.

I was recently in for a check up on my eyesight and it was fine. It doesnt take glasses to see your obvious flame-inciting post.

Not trying to start a flame war. I'm genuinely interested in finding out why gamers buy LCDs despite their limitations in gaming. And how am I being ignorant? I've seen recent LCDs that claimed to be fast and still saw ghosting with them.

I can see ghosting in the new 8ms displays. 16ms easy to see as well.

I bought an LCD because I can't stand CRTs. Even with an 80Hz refresh rate they still give me headaches after a few hours of use. No such problems with LCDs.
