Games are too dark!

I'm sick and tired of this........ every damn driver set I use for my Gainward GF3 Ti200 in Windows XP, the gamma is too damn dark. When I set the gamma value in the Display Properties, it's bright enough for the desktop.... until I enter ANY OpenGL or Direct3D based game. The gamma reverts back to the 1.00 value and then the games are so dark, they're unplayable.

I'm currently running WinXP and the 27.42 drivers. It doesn't seem to matter which driver set I use though. It's the same damn thing every time. I've tried 3rd party programs like powerstrip, riva tuner, and nvmax but they don't do jack squat.

Any ideas?

It seems to be an issue with all nVidia cards.. I guess thats how they like it.. or how they think it should be.. dark.

The best solution I've found.. increasing the brightness on the monitor while playing. And/or adjusting in-game gamma settings. Most games have this option.

Some games have the option to ignore Hardware Gamma, which is what you set in the Drivers I belive.. So that may be enabled in the games you are playing. I know it exists in quake3 based games.. the command is like ignorehw_gamma "0" I belive..

Its not that those programs don't do anything. Its that your games level the gamma ramp when they start up, so any changes you made for the desktop are lost.

If you set up something like PowerStrip properly, you can restore your gamma preferences with a hotkey *while* you're playing, and it will remember - next time you run that game, it will restore and maintain your gamma preference automatically.

Powerstrip is the way to go with this problem, you can adjust the gamma in game with the hot keys, a must when you walk into a dark room and some swine is hiding in the corner.

The gamma issue is only present on a few of the earlier 27xx drivers and any driver before them or after the 2742s should work just fine (ie the game won't reset the gamma when it starts).

It's also rather ironic but I've found the gamma reset problem exists on my Radeon 7000 while nVidia's cards have usually always worked just fine.
