Wish I had a class like that for me when I was that age in the early 90s. Great job giving them exposure to another type of gaming.

I've never been to a LAN party and would like to cross that off my bucket list some day, but there don't seem to be any near me

Just a heads up, I noticed someone said Torchlight earlier and SlickDeals has a front page deal for it for free from GOG.com link

Torchlight is not multiplayer unfortunately.

I think it might be worth the time to email a company like was said earlier. Otherwise, I've been combing the net for some freebies - I just don't know how much interest I'll get for the old starcraft 1.

Someone mentioned the violence in the games and you're right, I have to be pretty careful about that. The first thought I had was TF2 through steam. I'll have to see what the higher-ups will put up with.

Thanks again for all the input! I'll keep it in mind when I get a bit closer

I think they'd enjoy Soldier of Fortune. You can shoot off body parts. It's a great murder simulator.

Look into BZ Flag. (http://www.bzflag.org) It's free. available across multiple platforms and a lot of fun. You can find maps that are two or four team Capture the flag etc. or you could have the kids develop their own map after perhaps surveying a few good examples to get ideas. It doesn't require a lot of HP to run, though better hardware gets you better graphics.

The game is also dirt simple to learn how to play but very compelling since it's a fairly concentrated arena (depending on how large you make it). simple mouse and a few buttons on the keyboard interface.

More...This is a game that our developers used to jump into on Friday nights to blow off steam after a week of work. Eventually the Product managers and Marketing people joined in

If you want to download a client and email me or set up a chat, I can give you a quick tour. One of the things I love about the game is that I can jump in and play at any time for 2 minutes or two hours. Learning curve to get going is about 10 minutes to show the basic controls and a few handy keyboard switches.

You can also go into a game as an observer and watch the game play on any of the existing servers, or you can use your own local one in your LAN.

It's an awesome engine. Simple to get into...impossible to master. Problem is the online population is fairly concentrated and the new players get abused in games and tend to get frustrated and leave. Start your own server and play locally. I think you can even find a favorite public arena and host it locally. Missile wars and Missile wars 2 are great general arenas. The pillbox games are very simple with no flags or jumping...just the basics. There is also a standardized Hex arena that is popular.

finally, look for Planet Mofo, which is a square arena that can be played free for all or as 2 or 4 player capture the flag. It's well laid out.
