Games freezing under Win2k

In games like Diablo2 under Win2k would freeze periodicaly while other games, like Sims Livin Large, would just halt for 10-15 seconds at a time and then resume play. Because of this i decided to dual boot Win2k and Win98, but i would like to know if anyone else has had problems like this. Also, when playing games under Win2k my hdd sounds like its doing more than it should, can this mean i need more RAM? I have 128meg of RAM and if i go to 256meg RAM could that possibly fix my problems? Also im using all the latest drivers. Thanks.

Generally, if your hard drive is being accessed more than usual, it means that you don't have enough RAM for what you are trying to do. As a result, the program has to constantly access the hard drive for the information as opposed to getting it from your RAM. A RAM upgrade should definitely help resolve this problem.

I had a similar problem and found that disabling some of my Win2000 "Services" (Operating System functions that run in the background that you may OR MAY NOT need) helped. One culprit was the Speeddisk service from Norton 2001. But there are many of these services you no doubt don't need if you're running a standalone Windows 2000 desktop (not connected to Domain or network). See the following page:

Thanks, i only have windows load 2 programs at startup, but ofcourse there are tons of services that still load so il try that.

Try to lower your AGP aperture size in BIOS, or even disable AGP texturing with dxdiag.exe

Ok,got it fixed. Seems it had something to deal with the AGP card (my geforce2 MX) I went looking on forums and microsoft's site and found a little Regedit that would fix the problem for AMD systems hanging on 3d programs. After putting in the value i was able to run my games flawless and run 3dmark in loop for 1hr (3dmark was crashing as well, usualy on the 2nd or third test). Thanks for the help.
