games on Win2k :(

Hello,

Whatever I do, I can't get most of my games to run on Windows 2000 SP2. I have tried upgrading my 3D card drivers (Radeon 32 meg DDR), and going up to DX8, but still, my games either crash durring game play, or just give errors. The games that are doing this are fairly recent games (Soldier or fortune, Midtown Madness 2, Rayman 2, and others). Is this a Win2k thing, or is there something with the Radeon+Win2k combo? I have a GeForce 2 MX in another box that I could use if the problem is with my Radeon.

What do you think the problem could be?

IIRC, ATI's drivers for Win2k aren't very good.

I've been running Win2K for about a year and a half now. Almost all games that I play have worked without a hitch. In Feb. I bought a Radeon VIVO and had nothing but problems for about 2 weeks. I spent hours on the phone with ATI and they could not get anything worked out for me.

Things finally started working with the 3102 beta drivers. I havent updated yet and thighs are still good. That may be a good place to start. I do have SP2 installed and it did not chance anything for me. Do you have an AMD based system? Did you install the AMD Win2K patch? The MS one? (I don't have links) Are you using the Via 4 in 1's?



Are you overclocking anything?

Actaully once the card starts working, my experiance is that the drivers are fine. BUT, that is after 2 weeks of farting around.

I have a vodoo3 3k agp that will not work in opengl no matter what under win2k. It is so weird, it is flawless under win98. I even switched it in a friends system that had the identical card, and it would not play openGL games. I tried like 10 different computers, many re-installs, all the openGL drivers like minigl etc. it was such a croc.

I bought a 16m rage128 pro for $5 and it has worked flawless.

Moral of the story: Buy a $5 video card.

have you tried running in compatibility mode for different windoze?

No this is not an AMD system. Take alook at my rig in my signature. I can't get the normal ATI drivers working for this card, so I have to use the Dell-specific drivers for this card. They only offer one, and I have no idea what build number it is.

Will all my problems go away if I swap my Radeon with the GeForce 2 MX in my other machine?

maybe try reinsalling the games or something.

it seems fine to me after my installation of win2k + sp2 + aiw radeon. Well maybe... since I only play a few games and they work. I don't play the games u play. I play Counter-Strike, q2, q3, SC.
