No kidding, the multiplayer is the best part of Souls.

To each their own

I love the atmosphere, it's fantastic. I also like the relative realism of the game; each fight matters and could be your death. I just love the "feel" of the game.

I agree with your original post for the most part and could honestly do without the invading myself, although I don't feel the need to disconnect from the net or anything like that. I've only been invaded once as i'm typically running around in hollow form. It was some dude with the fog ring and a magic enhanced spear that one shot killed me. Pretty unexciting really. It was just a minor annoyance for me but not something i'd find particularly fun enough to want to engage in myself. I remember the same basic thing happening when I was playing through demon's soul's, just a bunch of douches with a typical cheap PvP build (usually involving a spear of some kind) invading people in a few particular spots all day long. Boring..

An actual PvP battle with similar weapons and armor might be pretty fun. But if you're mainly going to be invaded by some dude with a magic spear that can one shot kill you, I fail to see how that's enjoyable. But hey, if people get enjoyment out of it then great..

Ok so I rented this game this week and I haven't really enjoyed it to much so far. I have no idea where I am but I just killed this armored Rhino type thing with fire. It's been such a pain in the ass and I'm not sure if it would be easier if I didn't accidentally kill the merchant.

All I really know is I took a path, killed a big demon with a big hammer then crossed a long bridge that a dragon is guarding. I got seriously pissed last night after making it to the other side of the gate and opened it then died. I figured the gate would still be up but nope, I have to do all that shit allllllll over again. I ejected the game and put it back in the case and was planning on returning it today. Am I completely missing some major part of the game?

I played Demon Souls and did well on it. I don't think it's really the combat that is getting me, I think I'm either undergeared or missing another bonfire or something.

Also, I have yet to actually play with anyone. I was expecting to actually get to play some coop but nothing yet. Am I still to early into the game?

Yes, you're still very early in the game. However, here's a tip that may help:
If you haven't done so already, there's a set of stairs on the right of the bridge with the dragon that leads to the under side of the bridge. When under the bridge you will see the dragon's tail. Shoot it with about 15 arrows and the tail will fall off and you will be awarded with a very good early sword. Should making dispatching enemies much easier.

Also, don't worry about raising the door. As you noticed, it closes again anyway. However, there's a bonfire very close by. When you come to the wooden bridge with the cathedral on the left (and three enemies outside the door) take the right path to the next bonfire.

Speaking of bonfires (that specific one, actually): How do I "bind" to a bonfire? I didn't try very hard, but I couldn't figure it out.

Ok I rerolled my class and started over last night. I did much better after stacking endurance and able to actually move with my armor. I also was able to get the sword that you mention in your spoiler but I'm unable to use it since my strength is still at it's default level for a Knight. I think my endurance is something like 21 or 22 right now. Should I start stacking Strenght now?

Also here is a another rant. I finally was able to be summoned and managed to defeat the Bell Tower boss but everytime I use my humanity so I can try to summon someone I'm ALWAYS invaded. I was invaded probably 3-4 times by the same guy that 1.) was unable to be targeted and 2.) his health never went down. The second guy that invaded me wiped out me and two other people that I FINALLY was able to summon with one fireball. The multiplayer in this game is completely broken.

I also have a bunch of souls that I got from bosses and looted from corpses, should I cash them in so I can level up or save them for some reason?

Boss souls can be used to craft good weapons later in the game, so save those. If you're going all melee, I would suggest stacking STR to 16 at least, VIT and END in that order. After you get a decent amount of VIT and END, then go with STR. The Drake Sword will last you for a good while until you hit like 60 or so STR. Personally, I don't wear heavy armor because I mainly dodge. It would also be a good idea to get 12 DEX and a short bow you so can use that to pull enemies one at a time.

What, no. The drake swords gets outperformed way earlier than that (for me it was around 24 strength with the zweihander, could have been before that with a claymore), especially if you go the dex route (which I did not)

Well that's because Zweihander is most likely the best weapon in the game in terms of pure raw damage and stat requirements. Doesn't hurt that a Lightning Zweihander +5 does 721 damage while only needing 24 str (I think) which is ~200 damage higher than a Dragon Greatsword +5 which needs 50 str.

Yes, the zwei is a nice weapon, but that is besides the point. The point is that the drake sword becomes outdated very quickly, and there are many replacements for all kinds of builds.

im going to reroll a new character as my knight seemed so slow and clumsy. I was way better in the first one with a fast rolling character.

any suggestions on class and tips to get a good start going?

Is there any way to move faster while wearing heavier armor, like a specific stat I should boost? Just wondering. I can always switch to lighter armor if needed.

Also, I'm building an almost pure melee character (focused on Strength, Endurance, Vitality, etc.). Currently, I'm using the Drake Sword and I believe some sort of heavy elite armor? I forget what it's called exactly. Any suggestions as to other weapons and armor I should look into? I'm pretty close to going to the Depths. Just need to beat the Capra demon.

Two handed swords are slow and clumsy. I meant as far as a single handed, faster sword. I have Quellog's Fury Sword +5 with like 80 dex and I only do like 500 damage vs the 300 the Drake sword +5 gives. I wasn't saying it was the best weapon, but before you get enough levels and shards to upgrade, the drake sword is great.

IIRC, from looking at the wiki, the best weapon is the Demon Spear +5 but I don't remember.

If you took the master key you can kill Havel and get his ring. It increases you equip load by like 50 and you can wear heavy armor. I always wear the light armor so I can be as fast as possible. I put way more emphasis on dodging than blocking and taking hits. Besides, early on, all bosses will 1 hit you and nothing else should be hitting you anyway.

Awesome, I went ahead and took care of Havel. That ring is awesome.

Now, any particular weapons I should be on the lookout for? I'm currently using the Drake Sword. I like being able to use a shield in one hand and a sword in the other, but I suppose I'm open to other ideas.

I have gone pure melee knight, focusing on pike weapons for long thrusting range and raw blocking power (block, thrust, repeat). I have rung both bells, but haven't gone into Sen's fortress, concentrating on exploring everything I haven't finished up. Some questions:

1. I've heard hints that most people kill the Red Dragon on the bridge to the Undead Parish with arrows (thus getting the Drake Sword). Since I'm pure melee, I don't have/want a bow. Every time I go up on the bridge, even at level 36, this guy nukes me if he's there. Can he be fought melee? I don't want to know how to beat him, just whether it's possible at all without ranged. If I know it's possible, I'll try and figure him out.
2. After ringing the second bell, the fire keeper at Fire Link shrine is dead and I have an eye to avenge him. However, there's no indication on how to use the eye or when to use it. Do I just hold onto this? Or is there something I'm missing?
3. Sorta the same as above, I have a ring that allows me to 'cross into the abyss.' Again, no indication on how to use it or where to use it. Hold onto it, or am I missing something?
4. I also use no spells. I got to the Tomb of the Giants and, although I can handle the giant skeletons, it's so damned dark I can't fight them effectively and I keep walking off ledges. I've seen there's a light spell somewhere. Should I get this?
5. I've put down white soap stone near bosses, but I've never been summoned for MP. Again, is there a trick?

This game is madly addictive. I have probably lost hundreds of thousands of souls through trial and error and accidents. I don't know why I refuse to give up on it. Maybe because I know it's supposed to be hard and it doesn't really feel cheap. If I die, it was my own fault.

1.
I believe he can be fought melee if you shoot him with an arrow from the front. He comes down to the bridge. I can't confirm this because he bugged out on my game.

2.
Later in the game it will vibrate and you can use it in that room.

3.
Again, used later in the game.

4.
In the Demon Ruins there are these little bugs before you get into an area. They drop a helm called the Sun Maggot. This helm has a light on it and is great for Tomb of the Giants. Alternatively, after you have beaten the hydra in the forest, if you walk around to the back of the area (around the lake and you won't fall in) there is an open area where you quit and come back in. There will be a crystal golem. After killing him you will free an npc and can summon her (even in hollow form) at the front of that hydra lake. She sells a spell light spell. IIRC, you need like 16 int to use it though.

5.
I don't know if you have to be alive to be summoned, however, it is all based on if someone wants to summon you.

In the tomb of giants there is a lantern item you can pick up. You will need to initiate dialogue with an NPC there that is by the first bonfire in the tomb. Just up the ladder from where you lit it.

Everyone should just save themselves the frustration and do Izalith first or get the spell. I did that on accident. Just don't forget to kill those maggot things when you're there

I have a hard time knowing where I should go next (a problem I also had with Demon's Souls). Am I just missing something, or am I supposed to be exploring until I find the correct place? I'm level 30 and went through the Valley of Drakes (running past all of the enemies) and into Blighttown. I seem to be able to handle the enemies here, so I assume I'm in the right spot =/

Ahh just beat this game.. 87hrs total. So satisfying, even though there wasn't much of an ending cutscene.

If you have rang the two bells then your next step should be Sen's Fortress which leads to Anor londo. If you haven't done Sif you should because you need an item from him to get to the 4 kings. You can come back and do 4 kings when you have the lord vessel (Anor Londo) I did lost izalith last because for me it was a bit difficult to deal with the demons on the way to that place.

I found that when you find you cannot beat an enemy under any circumstances, you're probably in the wrong place. If you went to the skeleton graveyard first when landing at Firelink, you know what I mean (instant and brutal death). There are two ways into Blighttown. One is much harder to get to than the other (hint hint).

A second note: Blighttown almost made me cry. Until you get your learn it really well it is extremely frustrating. When I got to the bottom the first time, I truly though the game was impossible. Many hours of effort later and now I can run around there like a god.

Those skeletons weren't that hard at level 1, just took a while to kill. Dodging them was easy, they just have enough health I have had to hit them 1000 times. Now, going a bit farther and having respawning skeletons told me I should go a different route.
