I buy a lot of stuff for my company. I bought this laptop twice in the past month, and I can tell you, I like it more than my Inspiron 8600... It's lighter, thinner, and just looks so cool... I think you can actually use the dvd drive to listen to music and maybe even watch dvd's without powering on the laptop... did not try this feature though.

The field staff that I bought them for absolutely loves it compared to their previous thinkpads...

Heh folks,

One thing to consider is that laptops contain proprietary parts that are *very* expensive to repair and are more likely to be damaged accidentally since they are transportable.

As a result, it is a real gamble to buy a system with only a only a one year warranty.

At least if you buy it with a gold or platimum MC or Visa, you can generally double your warranty up to an extra year (consult your credit card agreement for coverage).

For myself, I wouldn't go less than a three year warranty with accidental coverage. For instance, I have had to have my Toshiba motherboard replaced twice under warrranty which would have *easily* equaled the price I originally paid for the unit (but luckily haven't had to use my accidental coverage).

Even thought the Acer appears to be a very nice system, this is something to consider.

Ok - I am confused - is this a Banias or a Dothan chip - Is there any functional difference between the two chips at 1.5 ghz - If this is a Banias chip then should we view this as a warm deal?

The one reviewed by PC Mag was:

15.0" TFT SXGA+
1.7 GHz Pentium-M (Guaranteed Dothan)
512MB PC2100 RAM
ATi Radeon Mobility 9700 128MB 256bit
60GB 5400RPM HD

I dont have a battery time on the one at 1toppc, but the one PC Mag reviewed clocked in at 3 hrs and 46 mins.
Both places have pretty good Reseller Ratings.

Can people who bought this laptop from Newegg tell me if they got a Dothan or Banias?

These do not have the DVD burner or WVGA like the one that is the topic of this thread, which is about 300 dollars cheaper, by the way

A question for current owners of the laptop: Is there an option for 1280x720 in the display menu? As you may know, this is a population resolution for widescreen LCD projectors (the 720 horizontal resolution perfectly matches 720p HDTV).

Oh, and by the way, CDW offers this laptop for $1300 with free shipping and the option of a two year warranty for $109.99.

First post in two years!

FYI, I received the laptop on Friday. It was DOA. I'll have to either RMA to NewEgg or serviced thru Acer.

Update: I called NewEgg and was told that for laptops, NewEgg does not accept returns or exchanges. All problems are to be directed to manufacturor . . .

was OOS at newegg for about 2 hours. Seems to be back now for $1359. Buy.com has it for $1245 but it appears to be on backorder (1-2 weeks). I placed my order at BUY and it hasn't gone through yet so am debating just canceling and surfing over to CDW. Nice bells and whistles on this one. thanks for the deal.
