Gaming at 1280x1024

Hey, I was just wondering how many people game at 1280x1024. I use the system in my signature. My max resolution on my monitor is currently 1280x1024, but even if I could go higher, I wouldn't. I had a CRT monitor that could but I didn't think it looked much better at 1600x1200.

I don't think games have that much detail designed into them? Do you agree?

With the system I have, playing at 1280x1024, I can run 8xAA 16xAF full everything on any game I have and get 60+ FPS (Bioshock, C&C3, most wanted ~120 fps (locked therei think), i get ~400 fps on cs source)

I need to get crysis and see whats up, but I believe I will be able to run that beautifully at 1280x1024.

If you game at higher resolutions... why?

Is it your monitors default resolution, so you just stay there?

Do you think higher resolutions look better?

It's not just about resolution, but screen size. I'm gaming on a 27in monitor at 1920x1200, and after using it for awhile I'd never want to go back to a smaller screen.

I still play at 1280x1024 on a 17" Samsung 731B. I do want a 22" widescreen LCD but also don't want that big of a monitor on my desk. I will be obtaining a Samsung 931B sometime this summer probably...

Using 1600x1200 on the same screen size as 1280x1024 (CRT) would be adding "free" AA to all textures and the models

1280x1024 I felt was always a pretty good resolution size, when I moved from 17"CRT 1024x768 to 19"1280x1024 it felt like a big jump. I noticed a lesser jump (in terms of size/resolution) when moving from 1280x1024 to 20"LCD 1680x1050

You're gaming at lower res, but have AA on... I'm the opposite, I game at higher res, but I don't see what the big deal about AA is. It makes things look a bit better, especially in still screen shots, but when I'm in game I just don't see much difference at all.

That is true. At higher resolutions there isn't much need for AA. I game at 1280x1024. I chose this size monitor after trying out a 1600x1200 monitor and the first thing I noticed was the mouse movements felt funny. I tried and I adjusted but no matter what I could never get the same feel as before... but besides that, there is a little bit of need for AA with 1280x1024...

Well i had used a 30" and i don't like it because its too big. 24" is my sweet spot but wouldn't mind a 27" with higher res than 1920x1200.

I purposely stuck with a 5:4 19" LCD to get 1280x1024 native. Vid cards last a heckuva lot longer

I game at 1280 x 1024 and 1600 x 1200 on a 21" Sony CRT - looks good for me and still beats every LCD I personally know regarding image quality.

Well, I do have a 1680x1050 22" WS as a secondary that I can switch to. But I like keeping the 19" primary because only newer titles properly support a WS aspect ratio (not the weird hacked settings for some older titles).

I game at 1680x1050 with a WS when I can... but my video doesn't usually have enough power to drive the native resolution, so I usually run at 1280x800. Either way I try to run at native resolution or least an integer multiple of that resolution.

I use a 1360x768 32 inch LCD TV to game on. I always run native unless the game does not support that resolution. I love the fact that I can run native at such a low resolution, it is less stressful on the system. It also looks great with some AA injected.

My native res is 2560x1600, I really need a large screen space for my work but I play games like Crysis and Flight Simulator X in Window Mode @ lower resolutions.

I'm still in love with my dell ultrasharp 17'', got it 2+ years ago and it still looks / performs amazing 1280x1024 is a sweet spot for me in the sense that my video card will last me quite awhile and games are still very crisp. Can't quite justify the jump to widescreen just yet, of course thats just me.

For me, depends on the game and my videocard, which is currently an EVGS 8600GTS SC. I play UT3 at 1600x1200/Intense on my Sony FD CRT, which is very fluid, but bump it down to 1280x1024 with custom settings for F.E.A.R. and enable AA, which is acceptable.

I have a 1080P 37 inch and prefer to use the native resolution without AA.

Higher Resolutions > AA in my mind. Having both though is even better.

Crysis I'm currently running at 1536x864 no AA, which would be about the same amount of pixels as 1280x1024.

in my last place, i had a roomate, and we bought a 720p projector, run wires under the carpet, and set up a home theatre with surround sound and a huge 150 inch projector screen at 16:9.
PC gaming on it was pure bliss...

When I moved out I sold him my half of the projector. I am now using a 24 inch 1920x1200 monitor... it is nice, but I can't wait to be able to afford a nice new 1080p projector for another huge screen... I don't know why you would want to play on a low res, small screen, crap monitor.

Or 1366x1024 for that matter. But ever since we first got graphics cards that can do 1280x1024, manufactures have been listing it as the recomended resolution on CRTs, despite the fact that it is a 5:4 aspect ratio while the monitors are 4:3.

I have a Sharp LL-172C-B. Native Resolution is 1280X1024 with 16ms response time. I run my rig in sig.

The most demanding game I've ever played is F.E.A.R. and CoD. I believe my system is pretty balanced at the moment, and there's no point in getting a system upgrade since my monitor is so small. Plus, I don't game often. I'm more of a casual gamer.

Oh, and I play CS at 1280X960 since 1280X1024 makes the text extremely large for some reason.

Apparently that odd resolution originally caught on over 1280x960 because it was the largest one that fit in the 4MB frame buffers on the video cards back then. It seems that nobody paid much attention to the aspect ratios back then. When LCDs came out, I think they were made 5:4 instead of 4:3 to support this resolution, which was well established by then.
