Well, given the microcenter prices. I'd still snag that 1045T though. $100 vs $150. Price matters. At $150... I might as well pay a bit more and go with 2500K.

I'd rather spend ~$200-250 and upgrade every two years.

8120 is a solid contender, imo.

Don't forget to post up some benches when you are all done

I'd spend $400 and when you're upgrading, my GPU is still going strong. But it's up to what you want out of it. If you are playing high resolution you cannot cheap out. If you want to max out games and add mods you can't cheap out either. Sometimes I find spending more gets me what I want where as I might be able to get away with a cheaper card, I'm just not happy with the performance at 1920x1200 when you started tossing AA and mods at it. Say what you want, but no $200 card has ever lasted me 2 years. I tried that route before and within a year I was in need of more performance on the GPU side.

I'm not here to tell you how to spend your money, but I do always recommend spending a bit more on the GPU. Even if you have to wait a bit longer for that build.

funniest quote I've heard all day.

Only to people who don't want top performance and are just trying to save a few dollars. At $400 it's beating up on cards that cost $100 or $150 more. That's why it's a steal. It's punching way above it's weight class.

I'm being totally serious and people are saying get a GTX 670 for a reason, not trying to brag about their cards or showing blind fanboyism. It's simply a card that performs better than it's pricing would normally dictate.

But it costs more and generates more heat. 7850 should cut it for single displays.

That is a stock 7850 (which is sipping power). What does a heavily OC'd/overvolted 7850 pull at load? I'm not saying it's a bad card, the Sapphire/MSI 7850/7870 heavily OC'd are great value and a good choice in their price bands today since Nvidia is taking forever to launch the 660/660Ti. Personally I would try to stretch to a 7950 (MSI non-ref version) at $349 on sale and OC it.

I know from experience that at stock voltage a oc'd 7850 (nearly 1100 core) is still drawing less than 100w. If you bump up voltage and clocks for a heavy oc I bet it's in the 125-140w range. Btw, you can make the same argument about other GPUs, so if you are oc'ing a 7850 by x% for instance, how much power is a 7970 or 680 drawing when THOSE are also heavily oc'd by a similar %?

I don't understand why people are recommending octocores and hexacores for gaming. Seriously? Have you ever looked at gaming benches for FX-6100 vs FX-4100?

http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-fx-8150--8120-6100-and-4100-performance-review/10

FX-4100 performs the same as FX-6100 performs the same as FX-8120 performs the same as Phenom II X4. Gaming isn't heavily multithreaded. BF3 is perhaps the only exception, and even then, performance per core is more important. You're better off spending money on a high end heatsink than extra cores.

To the OP, I'd recommend FX-4100 or 955/965 BE with as high OC as you can get, or sell the AM3+ motherboard and buy i5-3570K + Z77. Here's the stock vs stock gaming performance of 2500K vs FX-8150 (conservative estimate of 3570K vs FX-4100) in relatively CPU heavy games:

Newegg had the FX-8120 for $155 over the weekend, it was a good deal for sure.

What resolution are you playing at? That would make the difference in terms of what GPU to look at. If it's just 1080p then no worries, a 7850 or similar would likely do just fine.

i was going to buy the HD 7850 but a friend of mines said he'll give me his old ASUS ENGTX570 DCII/2DIS/1280MD5 since he got a new GTX 670.

Give as in for free? That's good then...even if it's a little slower, it'll probably be good for what you're after.

That's the best deal there is! Just use the 570. I'm pretty sure that at 1920x1080 it'll work just fine.
