I maintain x79 is silly. Because the only cool thing it has is quad channel memory, and We can't even utilize it because apps arn't threaded highly enough for it to kick in.

I am actually pissed off about this because I was going to buy x79, but then for some reason, intel did this whole memory bandwidth depends on app threaded thing......

I'd get it for the 6 core CPUs not for the quad channel memory (which is pretty cool anyway). I was fully waiting for consumer level 6 core processors before I upgraded from my Q9550, but when I found out that the roadmap for Intel CPUs had 6 core cpus going only to the high end (read: expensive) line I decided it wasn't worth waiting any longer.

Yes was 1 or 2 reports. But what are your chances of ensuring a new stock.

However, EVERY 2500k sold today is New-stock, and will get 4.8

I don't think you can guarantee every 2500k will achieve 4.8GHz as an absolute. There are too many other factors involved with achieving such an OC with that cpu....power supply quality, motherboard and its quality, etc.

sb was nerffed when the pci-e 3.0 cards were released for a high end gaming systems and if not today will become more of a bottle neck as time moves on .
-expected life of a new system 2-3 years , so 2014-2015 -if built today. sb has already spent 18 months of it's life cycle.[not sb-e]
-go back to 2-3 years and what high end gpu's did we have ? toy's today.
-what monitor res. did most people run ? in 2009 I didn't think I'd be ever be running a 2560 x 1440 monitor ,not even counting the higher res. people use **today**.
-small higher oc on a sb cpu might bring some fps today , but what about next's years gtx 780sli choked @ x8 + x8 pci-e 2.0 or the 880's after that.

-to me a mb\cpu are for mostly for running vid. cards for gaming , so why would anyone buy a pci-e 2.0 system for a gaming system **today** to crippling future cards [to save $ 10.00] .IMO

There are tangible benefits to X79. Such as:

Faster Civ 5 performance
8 more FPS in BF3
Run FRAPS with no slowdown
Knowing you have the best
Tons of PCI-E lanes
Your MOBO is called X79. Having an "X" in the name indicates high performance.

The only thing that gets basterdised is one's ego from not owning an X79.

Good question OP, i'm looking to upgrade in the next months and gonna go Intel for the first time since my first computer, the PII 400 beast back in 1998

From a Phenom II X4 955 (OCed at 3.7GHz) i'd probably go with the newest chip available and since SB and IB are so close in price, IB is the way to go IMO.

Depends where you coming from and what you want out of the chip. You want braggin epeen rights with 5+GHz or you want a good chip that'll give you great performances at stock or with a slight OC.

Not everyone need major OC to feel good about themselves.
