Gaming friends?

It's weird. I haven't made any in years. I remember that I used to make friends with people online (Quite a few). We'd go and play games together and the whole shabang. It even followed over into other games because we'd have AIM or some other form of communication. Used to be a lot more fun when I'd play games with people that I knew rather than soloing in pub games.

That whole experience has fallen off a cliff for me. It died a few years ago. Has that happened to anyone else? I find it's hard to make any friends in games like Dota/HON. (Where the competitiveness amongst team mates is higher than towards the other team; ruthless shit talking is standard) The same is true for CS GO. Playing on pub servers is a nightmare. I have to keep mics off because someone will spam the shit out of it (A 12 year old or a griefer). Barely anyone reads text chat anyway. Rarely is there "tactics" or mention of it. Everyone goes to their favorite camp spot or rushes into AWPs with P90s.

It sucks overall. I'm tired of playing solo-pubs. You can't get anywhere with that shit or get more enjoyable matches.

I'd imagine most people don't want to be friends with a baddie, hence why the Dota and HoN community hate you.

And the tactics of CS have always been the same thing. Rush B as terrorists or lose. Not exactly mind blowing tactical strategies are required to win a round of CS:GO.

See, this is what I'm talking about; seems like there's nothing but trolling anymore.

Since I'm new to gaming, this making friends is a whole new experience for me. Of course when playing Team Fortress 2 online, I've also noticed that most of them with the mics, sound like 12 yr. olds talking smack.

Still, I have fun.

The point is, get better at the games, and people will want to be your friend. I've made friends because I dominated them in Street Fighter or Marvel (plus, a ton of hate mail). The ones who are worth being friends with will recognize you are better and strive to beat you. Same goes for Dota / HoN. Get good enough to not screw up in games and people will want to play with you if not just for the fact you don't constantly screw up like most pubs.

Find a better server. There are plenty of TF2 servers that have mature, polite players.

Gaming has changed quite a bit over the course of the last decade or so. Trolling has become the new cool thing to do these days. And since Call of Duty became as huge as it is, online games are flooded with the annoying kiddies. The only time I had "gaming friends" was back when I was playing TFC competitively, IRC clan channels and all that. It was fun times. When I do play online anymore, I just roll lone wolf style with voice_enable 0, so I dont have to listen to those kiddies and mic spammers. The only gaming friends I have are real life friends that only play on Xbox. I still have a few buddies on my steam friends list from my competitive days that I chat with now and then, but it's rare that we game together.

Yeah kinda, when i was like 14,15,16 i made tons of friends playing diablo II, after that it just kind of scaled off. I get friend requests from randoms every now and then but i just ignore them generally.

Everyone i meet seems to fall into one of three subcategories, all are bad in some way:

1. Ultra hardcore must win every game, will rage at you if they lose, will rage at you if they win, just unpleasant in general.

2. Super noob shit at everything suck player who would be a better team-mate if they were afk. "How to plug in da keyboard guise hurr durr?"

3. Foreign, dont speak English well or at all.

Its tough to identify people who dont belong to any of those categories. The last random I actually spoke to on the mic was some guy from L4D 1, he seemed normal during the beta but turned pretty weird during release, kept telling one of my RL friends what to do and wouldn't stfu, bossy pain in the ass, a borderline category 1 I would say. I ended up incapping him and leaving him for the tank :awe:

More like, smackayou.

People have other qualities besides skills at said game. By the way, who even said the op was terribad? These gaming communities don't distinguish between poor players and new ones.

The only people deserving of poor treatment are trolls, or bad/new players who are arrogant and reject attempts at help.

K. Whatever. This is a typical game for me. I wait until everyone picks. I pick whatever helps the team. In this case, we needed a carry. I still lost, badly. It didn't matter what I did. It was over.

I've played thousands of Dota, HoN, and Dota 2 games. I know the communities. If you are bad, which the OP is, people won't be your friend and will hate you. If you are good, people will team up with your because people that are bad outnumber the good ones 100:1. They have to stick together. Solo queue is suffer.

You might have done well, but if you picked Luna last, you picked bad. From the stats, someone lost their lane and fed Timbersaw and he dominated. Who was supporting your team? Furion? I hope not.

For those who don't play DOTA/HON, that is not true at all. He's just spouting bullshit. Anyone who's been a long time player knows that's not true. No one is interested in grouping with you, ever.

No one was supporting. I had to buy all the wards on top of everything else (Including courier + flying courier). Mid was annoying as fuck. I had to keep dealing with ganks. Tinker was the first to be fed actually. Bottom lane both fed 1-3, 0-3 before I was even level 7.

Nobody wants to group with people who last pick hard carries when their team has no support, this is true.

You think a support would have done better in that position? You're still trolling. God damn. When are the mods ever going to get here?

In just about every multiplayer game I eventually stumble upon a pub server that has both good players and fun/funny people. Inevitably I end up spending a lot of time on this server and make friends with the other regulars. Happens in every game.

Yes, a support would have done better. You went mid on a hero you couldn't have a large effect on the game with until very late (which is usually too late). Supporting would have been better. You're short lane had either a solo melee or dual melee. Furion as a jungler isn't exactly the best ganker for short lane, so you lost that one. if you pseudo trilaned (dual short with a jungler) you still sent a bad hero suicide (solo long). You should have taken the safe lane and not went mid if you insisted on picking a carry.

If you had picked a support, the game could have been drastically different.

I can see that if we continue this it'll probably end up as one of these damnedable casual vs hardcore gaming arguments. I'll try not to go there.

It's just that, most people are inherently selfish. They're more likely to notice their own successes or attribute wins to their own actions. Getting somebody to notice and/or like you based on your skill at the game is likely a herculean effort. I imagine the skill range allows somebody to effectively hover around "good" without having been on televised G4 tournament events.

I prefer the intelligence metric to the skill one. Usually people who type well, don't abuse vulgar language, and have a sense of humor (or humility) are people worth being around...skill or no. Also, people like that usually have the capacity and attitude necessary for improvement.

I agree. And being selfish makes you a bad player in Dota. It is a team game, and as Trident shows with his stats, a single player can't win it (most of the time, I've had a few pub stomps where I could have won by myself and I have actually seen a game where 4 of the 5 players quit at the start and the solo guy won).

TBH Most of the gaming friends is easier to make wether you are good or not. Most people play casual. EG: MW3 I'm extremly goood on PC and hold a 6 + K/D and always got group of people on TS that we recruit that are above average. Few years ago used to be just easier to get along and make online friends but now a days you just have to be good @ the game to get with a clique.

I just find that there are too many games out to focus on making friends for a particular game. Unless I know people in real life, I don't typically make in-game friends anymore. I also feel that it was easier 10 years ago when being online was less accessible to immature people. Now it's a good 5:1 ratio of trolls to genuine people.

Change your avatar and pretend to be a chick.

Yeah, you might have a few awkward moments in PMs but its a small price to pay.

I like to troll in those DoTa2 games, just run around in circles while i'm listening to pandora or surfing the internet. I should really save chat logs to see the tears and post it sometime.
