maybe you guys can help me out, I'm looking to pick up a good headset for gaming, looking to spend about $100 headset has to have a mic.

I've been reading review after review but opnions are so mixed and cant decide on a brand.

I'm looking into possibly a USB Headset with the build in sound card, but since I have a quality M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card, I think I'm better off going with a regular standard set.

Any Suggestions ???

Right now I'm using the Logitech gaming headset NCSoft threw in for free when I purchased the Guild Wars Collector's Edition. My friend bought a practically identical Logitech headset at MicroCenter the other day for $20. Plugs right into the soundcard and has inline volume and mute.

My brother in law has a Plantronics model that costs $60, it does sound a little more clear and has "3D" audio. Since that seems to be in your price range I would consider that, or a Sennheiser. If you've settled on a particular model don't forget to take a glance at froogle.google.com just to see what the "market rate" is...

Same here, it does the job well enough.

Sennheiser PC-150 = awesome.

I can't see the need to spend $100 when the PC-150s sound so good.

I have PC-150's.....AWESOME STUFF. Really, I got them for $35 off amazon, see if you can pull something off like that too. Really, the quality if kickass, no certain range sticks out a ton, and the really low bass is actually audible for one and not ignored. Great stuff.

PC160 is the successor to PC150 and it should be available now. Also, Icemat Siberia and Steelpad Steel Sound 5H.

Or, you can get a separate lapel mic and "real" headphones like Sennhesier HD555, Audio Technicha A500, etc.

Also, if you have a good soundcard, stay away from USB as it essentially replaces your soundcard. USB is only useful if you go to LAN parties, play on lots of different computers, some with crappy sound, etc.

I bought these LTB True 5.1 Headphones over from Newegg.net, except I got the USB version. I'm very much satisfied by the sound quality, but I've had some problems with the USB version (probably because my games are set to use hardware based accelleration) and the microphone detaches when you don't need to use it...

I'm going to buy the standard set for use in gaming...

I have a plantronics set (the cheapest headphone with dual earcup things) pretty cheap and stuff, and the earphones dont work but the mic does. I've been using that around my neck and using my hd-570's from sennheiser for about a year and a half and still like how it works

That being said : i'm sure you can find a decent headphone set for much less then 100. I've used a bunch of plantronics and i think the audio-90 was the most comfortable/satisfying i used, albiet their audio quality was somewhat lacking. But their price range was around 30ish : i'm sure something in the 50 range would be sufficient.

I used to have a Koss set from Compusa that cost me $10, and came with ear buds. The thing worked great and had awesome sound, for the price, for a little over a year until my rabbit ate the cord...damn rabbit! Now I have a pair from PC Club that cost me $15 and they have been running well for over a year, no idea on the brand name though there is no tagging on them at all, but the do have stereo "3d" sound with a subwoofer...good sound out of these too.

155 are a great headset when i had the pc-150s they seemed to continue to go out meaning either the mic or one of the ear piece stopped working. I had them refurbished a few times and then they said ***k it stop sending the 150's back to us here is some 155's so i got mine for free. They havent had anything wrong with them for the 2 months that ive had them. Its quite a good headset and sound is pretty good for a USB soundcard adapter.

I've been giving advice on this on Sharky's for a while:

There is no medium price range for headsets. The top of the line on the "lower" end is the Sennheiser PC1** range (PC150 for soundcard, PC155 for USB, though they just came out/are coming out with PC160). After that, there's one model between $100-200 (something from Beyerdynamic, don't recall what), and everything else then falls upwards of $200. So if you're looking for a single unit, I'd go with the Sennheiser.

Note that you can probably get better sound for the same price with a pair of Sennheiser HD201s (the head-fi crowd is raving about them and thinks they're by far the best closed cans under $50 and among the best under $100) and a separate mic. Since the 201s are ~ $20-30, you can get an ok mic for the price of the PC150s, or with your budget, a pretty good one.

Sennheiser pc160, I own this headset, its much like the 150 but with better sound quality. The headset it self is very high quality and works great for in game talk..
