I've currently got an older Iiyama Vision Master Pro 512 22-incher that I'm looking to upgrade. Its a few years old now and the screen gets fuzzy in WinXP at pretty much any resolution over 1024x768(Its like when you get the slight double image on your TV(ghosting is aybe what its called...), very annoying and I've tried everything to try and fix it but nothing works). But anyway, I'm in the market for a pretty large LCD monitor that will play games well on my FX 5900 Ultra. I'm looking for a monitor of at least 20-21 inches. I was considering the Apple display until I found out about the fact that you can't make any adjustments to it. So if anyone has any suggestions for a well performing large LCD monitor I'd appreciate it!

20-21 inches is pretty big. I just got my Viewsonic VP171 and so far it's been great. There is no ghosting in games and has a 16ms response time. Maybe you can get two of them and use the dual video feature

Both Samsung and Iiyama have a 20 inch monitor that that has a 25ms response time. Is that decent for gaming performance? The Sony monitor has a 30ms response time, which seemed a little high, especially when compared to the 16 ms response times of the newer 17" models...

When looking for an LCD remember that the size listed on the monitor is actually the "Viewable size". I love my 19" Microtek (sp) no ghosting and it has I believe a 25ms response time.

Also remember that the LCD you buy will have a recommended (calibrated) resolution. Mine is 1280x1024 so anthing other than that does not look as good.

Most people say you want an LCD with a pixel response time of 16 ms to eliminate ghosting/streaking. I don't know an LCD and won't for a LONG LONG time because they're not a cost effective product in my opinion. And to my knowledge, they don't make anything larger than 17 inch that has a 16ms pixel response time.
Ghosting may not be apparent to some of you... but I bet if your's has a 25 ms response time, and you play Unreal Tournament 2003, you'll see ghosting and streaking.

I play it and DO not see ghosting... Ofcourse I use the DVI not the Analog input which makes a huge difference.

I dunno... I've been to Best Buy and other computer stores and seen ghosting on $600 and $700 LCD's that the salesman told me wouldn't have any.

Get one with a res of 1600x1200 because then you should be able to use 800x600 or 1600x1200 resolutions with no distortion issues. (since 800x600 should just mean 1 pixel is 4 pixels, if you get what I mean).

I play UT2003 everyday for hours on my 25ms response time LCD and see no ghosting. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough. I love my LCD and wouldn't got back to CRT for anything.

I have a 172T and I play a HUGE variety of games from mmorpgs, to fps, to rts, etc. NO problems whatsoever with ghosting or anything else using DVI. This monitor is so vivid in its coloration and the size seems to be just perfect. DEFINITELY worth the purchase

It really depends on what game you want to a play and what role you play.....
Played on a 4ms rise 19ms fall LCD flat panel and also a Trinitron CRT at 85Hz..

From my experiance...in faster FPS like RTCW: ET, a CRT will give you a definate edge..unless you always use the rocket.........
The LCD however, is more than enough for slower shooters like BF1942 or BF1942 + DC ..............
It not a matter a ghosting or not...on a LCD, target tend to be much to track.........This is especailly true with fast shooters and I can assure you that your score will be higher with CRT than with a LCD..

Don't you mean NEC 1760NX? ~$370 right now shipped at Newegg, and yes, I too recommend it.

don't suggest lcd for gaming, its not quite ready. but pcs have dual monitor outputs these days, get one of each. crts are cheap, and for video/graphics editing/gaming they cant' be beat. lcd you use for text.and well having two monitors is just natural. its natural as having multiple windows open

you have to remember those response times are for black to white transistions. going from color to color is slower. contrast is also important in games.

Stay away from the 213Tif you play games, horrid ghosting in some. Tried it and returned it for that very reason. Still looking for a replacement.

While it's only 1280x1024, the Dell 1800FP (18.1") has hundreds of positive comments here, including positive comments from gamers.
The quoted pixel refresh is 30ms, but there are very few who describe any ghosting - even in FPS games.

If gaming is your main priority...I would still recommend a CRT. I have a 17" LCD 1280x1024 DELL Ultrasharp.....but it's not great for gaming.

But unless gaming is your main priority....I would get an LCD. I will never go back to a CRT.

Don't get me wrong....games look really good...just not quite as good as a CRT yet.

I have (2) 1800FP's w/ a paper spec response time of 30ms, and I do not see any ghosting while playing GTA3 VC, UT2K3, or watch DVD movies. Hands down these are some of the best LCD's currently on the market with a nice price vs. performance ratio.

I had a bunch of 1800FPs, (I traded them in for 1702FPs), and I thought they did a good job of providing a good blend of size and performance. However, the AUO monitors did do a much better job with motion blur though.

Cheers,

Kristopher
