gaming mouse or 360 controller ?

I know this is sorta a general question but I am about to start playing some pc games due to a recent vid card upgrade . my question is do most people who play shooter games like " left for dead " call of duty " black op's . borderlands prefer using a mouse and keyborad or a controller ?
my system has 4 gigs mem< a Intel core 2 duo E6400 < and a nvidia Gforce 8400 vid card

For a first person shooter, I cannot think of a single reason to go with a controller over a properly supported mouse and keyboard. And all the games you mentioned support mouse and keyboard, and are infinitely better with them.

I own all 3 consoles, and currently use a wired 360 controller for my PC for games that need a gamepad.
But for first person shooters, there is simply still no comparison. Mouse and keyboard all day, every day.

P.S. If you try and use a controller against opponents using mice+keyboard, you will be raped. Hard.

You *will* get raped playing shooters online with a controller, a mouse is way more accurate. Racing and sports games are much easier played on a controller though.

I use a controller when I feel like kicking back in the recliner instead of using my computer chair, keyboard and mouse. If you're playing single player shooters/racers/sports games a controller works absolutely fine.

Only use 360 controller with single player console ports which have bad KB+M controls.

Honestly though I can't imagine playing an FPS, particularly on the PC, using a controller. You'd be at a huge disadvantage right out of the gate.

Use a controller if you want to stay in your console confort zone, but with a mouse and keyboard your accuracy will go up by a large margin. You can probably get away with it in single player, but in multiplayer your at a huge disadvantage.

Anything that requires precise aiming, like a first person shooter, you absolutely HAVE to use a kb/mouse if you're going to play on a PC.

Anything else - RPG's, racing, sports - are usually better with a controller.

Just like everyone else said, for FPS's nothing beats a keyboard/mouse but for games like Grand Theft Auto 4, I prefer 360 controller.

I will add that gaming mice are stupid and as long as you have a two button + scroll mouse you are fine. There's no reason to get a l337 h4x0r mouse, they're a waste of money.

Speaking of which, if you want to get something good for your money, get a better graphics card, the GeForce 8400 is pretty bad.

It can definitely make a difference. Once you've played with a mouse that you can change the DPI on the fly, you'll never want to go back.

Eh, I could change the DPI on the fly with my MX700, later upgraded to MX Revolution and now MX Performance and I have never missed that feature. It's pretty pointless TBH.

Agreed. Although I would have argued against this right up until just a couple months ago when I got my R.A.T.7.

I <3 my "sniper mode" button! (it cranks the DPI way down while holding a thumb button, perfect for aiming down a scope at range)

i did ok in darksiders with KBM, but i would not be surprised if a controller ended up being easier. some of the key combos were kinda funky.

Definitely. I play BC2 and I use lowest DPI on the ground, then pump it all the way to highest DPI when I am in a tank and need to turn the turret fast.

Yep the vast majority of gaming mice are a waste. This is the best mouse ever made:

I would still be using it if they made them more durable, im currently on the next best thing an MX518 which behaves like the above mouse with added durability and worse button layout (for me anyways). In todays FPS its all about who spots who first and playing mind games with people, you have have the worlds most expensive mouse yet someone with a ball mouse who spots you first will 99% of the time kill you heh.

In saying that i am planning to give a G9x a shot, just to see if logitechs laser is any better than the POS microsoft/razer HABU thing i tried a few years back, awful awful mouse

The G9 is an amazing mouse. I have smallish hands and use a claw grip and the G9 fits me like a glove. I wasn't much of a fan of the G5 because it's more of a palm grip style (large surface area), but for me G9 all the way.

Some people think that the high dpi on gaming mouse is overrated. Let's put it this way. If you use a mouse with low dpi, you have to raise the sensitivity in software (windows, games, etc) to boost it, especially at high resolutions. It places a scaler so the higher the sensitivity the less responsive your mouse. If your playing a fps your accuracy is directly related to the scaler that the sensitivity setting uses.

If you get a high dpi laser mouse, you can raise the mouse dpi and lower the software sensitivity, which gives you much more accuracy. An arbitrary example would be that with a low dpi mouse, you might track 1 out of every 20-25 pixels whereas with a high dpi mouse you can track 1 out of every 3-5 pixels at the same cursor speed (no realworld numbers were used in that example). You can immediately see the advantage.

Lately software has been using something called "cursor smoothing" to help compensate for lower dpi mice (it lowers sensitive for small movements), but too much and your movement feels mushy.

An RPG with a controller? Hehe, Id love to see someone try to play an MMO with a controller. Maybe you were thinking Hack/Slash like Diablo, that might be possible.

My best friend, who games mostly on his XBox, tends to mock me for playing games with a mouse on PC. . . apparently it's unrealistic to be able to spin around instantaneously with a mouse and it makes everything easy. I think he's jealous.

Not to sound like a douche but your PC still sounds kind of weak. I dont have that much better but it is somewhat better and I usually have my settings turned way down. I could maybe get by with them turned up some but I prefer performance over pretty graphics mainly due to the fact all the games I play are online against other people. But give it a try and see what happens.

As far as controllers and whatnot, get a gaming mouse. I suggest Razer, I tried out like 5+ gaming and nongaming mice before I decided to fork over the cash on what I really wanted the whole time but didnt want to spend the money on which was a Razer Lachesis. It was leagues ahead of the Microsoft and Logitech mice I tried. The Lachesis has 9 completely programmable buttons, only 7 are really usable though because its an ambidextrious mouse. But having 7 buttons at your finger tips is a huge advantage. The other 2 huge points about the Lachesis was how it felt in my hand and when it would stop reading when lifted off the surface it was on. A lot of gaming mice have weird shapes which are nothing but a gimmick and make the things unusable, Razer makes their stuff look stylized but the overall size and shape arnt that different from regular OEM mice. What I was talking about as far as lifting the mouse is you want a mouse that quickly stops moving your cursor when you left the mouse off whatever surface youre using. If a mouse continues to read after you lift it off the table youre going to get some totally unnatural cursor movement.


So I recommend the Razer Lachesis. You can get them cheaper then what I paid now.

PS I think all the DPI crap is nonsense. The Lachesis has a high DPI but I dont even use it. I can kick peoples ass in FPS games with a regular old mouse.
