Hiya folks...

my current Dell optical mouse has a habit of spinning me around violently....(in game that is, the little critter isnt alive...lol) this is when im playing CS:S......have tried drivers, cleaning etc, i think its just a little defective....

anyhow, im gonna replace it and would like opinions on whats good for CS:S'ing...

preferred requirements:

middle wheel a must

definitely 2 buttons, more i guess is ok

rather it has a cord......i want fast response, USB is fine....

however i will consider cordless is there is more or less no difference in response....

i dont mind how heavy it is.....and i dont mind the shape too much as i have large but deft hands....

please post ur choice and your reasons for and against it.

cheers folks (btw, try and list ones that are available in the UK if poss)

You want the Logitech MX700 cordless, the lag time isn't noticeable. I'm not a gamer myself, but I've read nothing but good stuff about it.

Here's a review.

5 years experience in competitive Counter-Strike, Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. This mouse is symmetrical and very gamer friendly. Personally dislike Logitech mice after going through a whole bunch of them (MX300, 310, 500, 1000, Dual Optical). Logitech has mouse acceleration which can be "turned off" but never really is off. Their driver support for FPS games are horrible. A lot of progamers also like Microsoft's Explorer 3.0. But if you don't play shooters then I would recommend an MX510.

When your mouse spins out, sometimes it can be due to a bad mouse surface. Consider a new mousepad. I myself am thinking of ditching my fUNC 1030 of 3 years and going for a SuperMat (basically a HUGE cloth mousepad).

Chaos is right. I have the diamondback, and it is greeeat. It is the most precise and smooth mouse i have ever used, and is very light (great for sudden headshot movements ) anyway, i play CS (and sometimes CSS) and usually win, haha. You may want a new mousepad, however, to take advantage of the teflon feet (doesnt slide as nice against wood desktops than a nice mousepad )

Trust me, get this mouse! I am very glad i did.

edit: answering your requirements....
Has a middle wheel
Has 2 buttons, and two thumb buttons (also two little finger buttons, but not very usuable - the only bad point about the mouse, but i dont need these butts anyway)
Long cord, gold plated, and i have mine USB Overclocked from 125->500hz
Light
Good for large hands (huge buttons)

yeah...well I have the red one and I love mine more than you love your silly blue one.

For around $30 the 510 is a steal. Best money I have ever spent.

Yeah the red ones are cheaper than blue ones. The best price I can find is $28.89 shipped at Chiefvalue

I have this mouse. Love it like the cold plastic son I never had.
I know a lot of people knock it, but I recommend you try it for yourself.

i am also in the market for a new mouse. i was at a LAN party, and when i got home i found out my mouse was missing. i'm not too terribly sad, it was a $14 logitech, but i'd like to move away from the POS microsoft ball mouse i'm being forced to use now...i'm eyeing the MX1000, but its pretty expensive. having a laser would be sweet though;P does anyone have this mouse? how good is it?

The MX1000 uses the same 800 DPI Cmos sensor that the MX510 uses but the only two differances are the cord and the Light Source used to iluminate the mouse pad.

laser vs led
A laser is a more focused light source that does not scatter it's photons like an LED and alows for the same identical cmos chip as the 510 to see the surface better. The 518(led) will beat both of them in performance tests, because of it's higher resolution.

I hope to see a laser version of the 518 with a cord some time soon. For me there is nothing worse than a heavy battery powerd mouse that dies while playing and takes extra wrist muscle to move. During games that extra weight slows down your reaction time and hurts your score.

Here's a review.

The MX700 is the cordless version of the MX500 (they use the same sensor). With a cordless usb mouse you are limited to a refresh rate of 125 Hertz versus a corded PS/2 mouse can refresh at 200 Hertz. I have personaly recorded my mouse haveing a refresh rate of over 229 Hertz!
And don't forget the extra weight and un-reliablity that the battery adds. Try moving a red brick around on your mouse pad and you will see what I mean.

PS, I am using a 2 1/2 year old MX500, but will upgrade to the 518 or a laser version if it comes out after it.

the standard sample rate of serial mice is 40Hz, ps/2 mice are also sampled with 40Hz on windows 95/98 but with 60Hz on windows nt. mice with usb interface are sampled 125 times/sec, but unfortunately they only work with windows 98 and windows 2000.

40 or 60Hz is not very much. if you move your mouse quickly you will see that the mouse pointer doesn't follow your movement smoothly but instead it will jump from position to position. in 'normal' windows applications that 'normally' doesn't matter, 40 or 60Hz is enough for most people (as long as they haven't tested 200Hz , but there is one kind of programs which suffer from a low sample rate: 3d games!

3d games? yes. imagine you bought a fast pc, a nice 3d accelerator and are playing your favorite action game. your graphics hardware is often capable of displaying 80, 100 or even more fps (frames per second) in some scenes. but when you turn using the mouse, the game can only update your position inside the 3d environment after it receives a new position from the mouse. and this happens only 40 or 60 times a second! so on some frames the game will receive one (or more if the scene takes long to render) mouse sample and on other frames not even one. this results in a very jerky movement. this is also the reason, why many 3d games offer you to enable a 'mouse filter'. this filter calulates the average of some mouse samples and will assign every rendered frame a calulated mouse sample. this will smooth the movement very well but results in some lag, i.e. it takes a while for the game to react on your mouse movements.

so the best way is to use a ps/2 mouse and tweak it to 200Hz!

Really? You'd have to be referring to only the Viper (1000dpi) for that statement to be true because the Diamondback is 1600dpi and has been available for a few months rather than being listed on a web page as "coming soon".

Thanks! Well, then I would choose either one. My prefrenence is tword logitech for it's consistant quality. But Razor would do just fine.

It's avalable now from a few online retailers, but the mx 518 has not gone nation wide yet iin stores. They are all sold out, but a few days ago there were some in stock.

It should be fully avalable in april

It's basicly the same mouse as the MX510, but without the wire and With a few Quirks.

I second this notion. The mx1000 is great! I love the mouse ever since upgrading it from my mx700. Laser technology rules.
