gaming on an lcd

To the thread-starter:

From my experience, "ghosting" is very subjective. There are many people in this thread and elsewhere that say they don't experience ghosting, or it doesn't bother them. There are just as many people who say otherwise, as well. Personally, ghosting bothers me quite a bit. I played a game on a friend's 2001FP and the difference between my 20" CRT was like night and day - in favor of my CRT.

If your primary concern is gaming, I strongly suggest getting a nice CRT. Better yet, find a way to test some of these montors and judge for yourself.

I used to have a 19" Viewsonic CRT and I now have a Dell 1800FP.

I can notice a difference. The 1800FP is very good when gaming, don't get me wrong, but CRTs ARE STILL BETTER for gaming, period. I've seen the 2001FP in games too, and it ghosts as well.

The ghosting on these monitors(and other 16ms or less) isn't bad enough to be called "an issue," but it's certainly present.

So I would put it like this. If you were suggesting a monitor for a gamer, don't suggest an LCD, but if they ask you if they COULD game on an LCD, you can tell them yea...it's very possible. I think a CRT is like 1.2 times better than an LCD for gaming and 382742332 times worse for everything else, compared to an LCD.

Gaming on my 23 cinema is wonderful and thats why I'm getting the new one with DVI for my new PC.
Quality LCD = more money= more happy= better gamer.
I have read Dell top of the line is rated very well by Maximum PC mag. Check there site for review.

i can definitely notice a decrease in frames with my samsung 712n (12ms). before i had been using a dynaflat 17" samsung and i had no problems with gaming. i play fast action games like quake3 and cs and really do notice the difference between 60fps and 100fps+ (especially when i turn a quick 180 in game). its kind of annoying but i spend more time in 2d so its a tradeoff.

I am happy with my 20ms LCD...never noticed any ghosting...& the color is a lot more vibrant than my CRT ever was.
