I think that's what BFG10K meant, and he is absolutely right.
BFG was focusing on how HDTV shouldn't be a consideration as it is too rare, which it isn't. BTW- That list on that site is far from complete, the PS2 has somewhere between 300-500 games available now. It only lists the ones they have information on it appears.
And, even if not that, 17" monitors can be had for relatively cheap nowadays, too.
And despite all the advances in technology a 17" monitor is, and will remain incredibly tiny.
A few things I noticed, 1-That's factory-to-dealer, 2-Not sure about this so don't kill me if I'm wrong, are they including ONLY the actual televisions?
That is a TV sales number, not the additional equiptment. The difference in factory to dealer and units sold tends to be fairly small in percentage terms(at least at any properly run business).
And 3-thats close enough to $2,000 per unit to make it not worth it to the vast majority of TV-owners, at least now, but admittedly, soon, I think it was like 2007 or so, TV stations will be required to broadcast in ONLY digital.
That average price includes $20,000 plasma displays, and it still is a number that covers ~15% of US households in one year. HDTVs are far from niche products.
And, even with these HDTV's, most are not 1080i, and even at that level, computers will beat out consoles, as only one (1) XBox game supports that. More support the lower resolutions, and, again, at that level, computers still look better in my eyes.
So you enjoy uber low poly, no pixel shader, poorly animated higher res images over the alternatives?
Pretty much everyone I've talked to that complains about resolution issues on consoles has never seen one hooked up properly to a HDTV(they think you just plug it in using the included cables although almost every HDTV owner I've talked to about it has no problems with consoles resolution). A guy I work with went out and bought himself a decent 52" Panasonic 1080i HDVT along with a DolbyDigital sound system and a few weeks later progressive scan DVD player. He even recalled to purchase the proper cables for it. He talked to me a bit about it and stated that he didn't notice much of a difference at all between it and hit previous DVD player until one of his friends noticed he was running it in 480i mode, halving the resolution. The XBox will autodetect the best resolution in can run at and enable it on its own. The GameCube you actually have to turn it on each time you play the game.
Ever seen FinalFantasy The Spirits Within running on a progressive scan DVD player hooked up to a HDTV? Can you point me to a PC game that looks one tenth as good running at any resolution? DVDs run at a max 480p.
