Im getting one of the Dell Ultra Sharp 24 inch wide aspect LCD monitors. But Im wondering if when I play games if most games like Doom 3, Far Cry, Fear, ETC. will run at those high of resolutions or will they run in a box on the screen or what? How's that work?

Ill have a 7800GT 256MB SLI setup in my system for video.

The Dell 2405 FPW does allow you to keep aspect ratio (i.e. 4:3 will can be set so it isn't stretched.) However, even with aspect ratio is probably won't look as good as the native 1920x1200. Most newer games support this ratio (Doom 3, Far Cry & F.E.A.R. included) but some earlier games don't and you will have to run 4:3 with your monitor set to aspect ratio in the OSD . . .

the 2405 has a 12ms response time anyway. It doesnt get much better than that on a 24 inch. every review I have read says that it's great for gaming. How could the 2005FPW be better with a 16ms response time? If anything is going to ghost its the 16ms monitor.

I think youre just kicking yourself in the ass for not buying the 24 inch. Misery loves company....... LMFAO.

That was not the question he asked.

Anyways, no problems with gaming on the 2405. Some games let you choose 1920x1200. Some game .ini files can be modified, look at previous posts for link to wide screen gaming. If the game only allows 1600x1200 it still looks great stretched, but not stellar.

I have not encountered any game that forces me to look at a small box on screen. That can happen during OX installation though.

Almost any game can run a widescreen resolution. The question is whether they support 16:9/16:10 properly. I have some serious doubts that > 50% of games do that, let alone most of them. That said, most of the "hit games" tend to do so, but there are still exceptions (BF2).

1600x1200 can be run 1:1 -- it's just 'pillarboxed', with black bars on the left/right. Looks great, but doesn't use the whole screen.

If you force games to run in lower (non-widescreen) resolutions, you can either have the monitor (or video card) scale them up to 1600x1200, or scale/stretch them to 1920x1200. Or you can run them 1:1, with black bars on all four sides.

The only problem with the monitor for gaming is that you will want to run your games at 1600x1200 or 1920x1200. To run newer games like this, you need quite a fast GPU.

Even on the LCD TV/Monitor you will still have to customize your games. I found the above link quite helpful. I'm never going back to 4:3 or 5:4 I'm hooked on 16:9 crystal clarity in widescreen

That doesn't mean anything. Response times can be measured in so many different ways that you can't really trust that. If you read the reviews, most say that the 2005fpw ghosts much less than the 2405fpw. The actual response time is probably closer to 25ms.

It's not my fault you're playing Doom on a 14 inch monochrome CRT. This monitor ****** OWNS and you know it.

Don't hate the player, hate the GAME.

I don't know what you're smokin homeboy but I got the 2405 and so far I've played Doom 3, Quake 4, Far Cry, Halo, and NFSU 2 and noticed no ghosting at all. Maybe you ate too many little squares of paper back in the day if you know what I mean.

This 2405 owns and thats the bottom line.

Looks like we got ourselves a real productive discussion going here.

All questions relating to gaming on the 2405 are answered here.

BTW, notwithstanding the poster above, Doom3 and F.E.A.R. do not support 1920 x 1200 resolution without a hack.

Im not trying to start some big flame war about which monitor has the fastest response time. BUT, if you look at the DELL site and not refer to a third party (i.e. PC Mag), you will see that they BOTH have a 12ms respnse time.

I, personally couldn't care less if it has a 12ms response time or not. All I know is that this thing DOES NOT ghost in any way shape or form and this 2405 is pure BAD@SS and OWNS a wimpy 20 inch any day.

Peace out homeslice.

My 2005 does not ghost either and I love it!
for $390 US shipped (what I paid), the 2005 is a pretty damn good bargain. Maybe someday I'll sell it and go with a 2405, but I really love the 2005, it's a fantastic panel!
Only thing I wish it had that the 2405 does is the component inputs.

First they are a different type of panel. According to the Dell manual, both these monitors have the same response times.

Dell 2005FPW specs
Dell 2405FPW specs

Dell 2005FPW (IPS): 12ms typical (Grey to Grey) / 16ms typical (Black to White)
Dell 2405FPW (VA): 12ms typical (Grey to Grey) / 16ms typical (Black to White)

IPS panels usually have a slight edge in response to VAs. THG and X-Bit have neglected to test these monitors so we will never know for sure, but the 2005FPW is probably faster. Additionally the IPS should produce a better gray scale (and thus better colors) with no viewing angle distortion.

Edit: fixed spec links
