Hello guys! It has been a long time since I have posted and I am happy to say my current rig has lasted me about 7+ years now (you guys helped me design it way back when). Anyhow, it's about that time again...

Looking to build a mid range build spending around $1,200. This is primarily just for gaming (not even sure what games as I'm currently not playing much but I like to be able to run anything that comes out at least on mid/high settings) and normal use. I don't need an OS (I have a Windows 7 version that was upgraded to Windows 10 and I'm pretty sure I can just remove the product key from my current machine and install on a new machine, correct?), nor peripherals or anything else not listed (I hope!) Also note that I will wait until the price of GPUs drop again and plan to purchase in 4-8 weeks. I can spend more if needed and could also wait a bit longer if needed for any reason as well.

  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor - $198.00
  • CPU Cooler - CPU includes a Spire cooler and I'll just stick with that?
  • Motherboard - MSI B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard - $92.00
  • Memory - G.Skill Trident Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 - $167.00
  • SSD - 500GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive - $152.00
  • HD - 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - $67.00
    • I really don't use much storage and also have a 1TB external outside of this. I could possibly reuse my current 128GB SSD or ~600GB HDD if needed.
  • Video - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB - $520.00
    • Would like to pay closer to $425 for this, or consider the 1070? Thoughts?
  • Case - NZXT S340 - $65.00
  • Power - 550W Semi-Modular 80+ Gold - $57.00
Total $1,318.00

Thanks!

ebay has 10% coupon right now for newegg's ebay store, coupon last till august 1st. check slickdeals, makes that videocard more affordable.
edit: with the code it makes GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 only $465. but i don't know if i'm allowed to link to deals.

Thank you, I will check that out now! I also just found a deal on newegg for a
Rosewill CAPSTONE 550M 550W Modular Power Supply (80 PLUS GOLD Certified) for $42 so I will snag that up now as well if the build looks good!

No worries! I will keep my eyes posted for more deals. Since I am in no immediate rush it is kind of fun! How does the build look though; anything worth changing?

if you really want that 1080, you might want a beefier power supply. pretty sure you can get a 650watt for that price.

Eek, well I hope the 550 will suffice because it is one of the items I already bought! I am just waiting to see how prices drop and what happens with the VEGA release honestly!

550W is fine for GTX 1080 and most likely Vega RX 56 as well which is said to use under 200 watts. For Vega RX 64, you definitely want 650W.

Your build is very similar to what I hope to build in about a month, except that I won't be buying a new graphics card. (I am just happy with my current card, so I don't want to upgrade right now.)

AMD's next generation of cards is due Aug. 14. If you are in no hurry, I would suggest waiting a week and a half to find out how those perform, their dollar to performance value, and how they shake up the market before buying. Honestly, graphics cards are insanely priced right now; the card I got last January, R 480 4GB, is retailing for $200 more now than it was then. So, there's good reason to be patient, as GPU prices are likely to fall eventually. Note that there's no certainty that you would be able to get one of the new AMD cards right after Aug. 14th. The supply is not pacing demand right now...

Alternatively, you could move whatever GPU you have into the above system w/out the new graphics card. Then you can hold on until you decide what sort of GPU you want when prices come down. Prices are so high right now, when they get back to normal (no knowing when that will happen), you would be able to afford a new PSU and GPU AND save $100.

Yes, I would wait the next week or 3 for the graphics card choice. With AMD finally releasing a high performance card (first in 2 years), it will potentially require a response from Nvidia (rumor is that they potentially announce/release the consumer GV100 based cards soon after AMD's Vega comes out if Vega beats the 1080Ti and the partially disabled GV100's beat Vega). I know many people don't think that the consumer GV100 based cards would be out this year, but I think it is all Nvidia marketing (heck the V100's are available, which is the fully enabled GV100 chip). At the very least, Nvidia will respond with a pricing restructure depending on the price/performance of Vega, at which point you might save $100 or so on the 1080.
