Parents house have a stand alone garage. a nasty storm passed thru. now neither the garage door opener nor the manual override works.

the manual override:
put in key to unlock the handle, turn handle. the handle turns and i hear the bar move. but the garage door wont lift up. it wont budge as if it was still locked.

since it's stand alone, the only way into the garage is thru the garage door. thankfully this happened on their way back to the house, thus the car isnt in the garage.

suggestions, besides cutting hole in garage door?

Where is the breaker that provides power to the garage?

That's the first thing to check...

does mean there's power or the locking bar is moving because you're turning the handle?

check for debris or dents / something holding it down.

If its like my door, the door is connected to the garage door opener and there is a manual disconnect to separate the door from the opener mechanism.

Most of those manual disconnects (all?) require you to physically be INSIDE the garage to disconnect the door from the opener mechanism...per the OP:

the only way into the garage is thru the garage door.

I'm kind of surprised that there is no other door/window in the garage.

Until you release the power door mechanism you aren't getting the door up.

Sounds like an install fail, do it yourself for the MFL.

You should have installed a people door. If you have a window that would be a cheaper break than damaging the door. Like the person above says though, make sure the breaker/fuse is not tripped/blown for the door motor. If that's inside the garage too double fail.

This. The "manual override" the OP is referring to sounds like the lock on the garage door which has nothing to do with the garage door opener and should have been unlocked if you're using a garage door opener).

Edit: Didn't notice that the only way into the garage is through the garage door. Hah!

Like others have said, you need to be inside and pull down on a cord along the chain to disengage it.

Looks like you'll be cutting through the wall of the garage (where the new people door will be going) to get in.

You should be able to make a big 'coathanger' pull for it. It may take some optics to pull off.

If you garage is wood frame it may be cheaper to cut into a wall first and try to use something to pull the release.

Pick the spot it would make sense to put in a people door.

No need to read the OP again. Same thing happened to me. I'm sorry if my post offended you, garage door master.
