Any garage door experts? One of my remotes was stolen from my car in my neighboorhood, Now not only an active remote is missing, I am minus one for my other car. I am fearful now that the person with the remote can enter my garage at will so I have unplugged the opener. My question is, can I reprogram the overhead opener and get a new remote w/o have to purchase an entire new unit and paying to get it installed? BTW, the unit is a liftmaster professional line made in 1996.

Thanks!

You should be able to change it or they would all be the same frequency. Contact the manufacturer about an extra remote and how to change it. I have seen some that are easy to change.

You can start by unplugging the door opener and disengaging it from the track using the handle to use manually. Then go get a replacement door opener at walmart or a hardware store.

I know the newer ones are programmable. Our new house came with a Genie but the previous owner lost the remotes. Went to Home Depot and put a new pair. Then you open the lid on the opener and there's a button to clear all codes. Then you sync up the new remotes. Yours might be too old for this. Google the model number and see what comes up.

I believe I have the same unit. The back end has an orange Learn button. Buy a new remote, change the dipswitch settings in your existing remote to match the new, then press the Learn button until the little light flashes, hit the remote button. Should work then.

Nowadays you usually press the learn button and an led on the motor unit starts blinking, then you press the opener button.

In your case you need to make sure you've deleted/flashed/removed ALL other remotes from memory. Consult the manual.

This. My chamberlain has the option to erase all previously stored codes. I did that when my garage door opener didn't come with 2 remotes. It was an easy 30 seconds and reprogramming new remotes took another minute.

even my old one (from before 2000) has dip switches to re-program the code...

quick search shows yours is electronically programmable...

Same as mine. I have to hold down the button to clear all codes. Then you hit the button, then the garage door remote's button, and it learns it.

Can't say exactly how to program the new remotes, but just about all garage door openers can be easily reprogrammed to a new remote unit.

This is why, as inconvenient as it is, you shouldn't leave garage door openers in your car.

The thief breaks into your car, gets your opener, and he's in the garage, where if your garage is like most, he has access to all sorts of tools and can break into your house in relative privacy with the door down.
Once they're in your garage...they're in your house.
