About five or six years ago. Two doors, new tracks, openers, the works. We went with a pretty low cost door, foam-insulated textured PVC. There were a lot more expensive options. We went with top of the line Liftmaster belt-drive openers, though. Total installed was around $4k-ish if I recall.

about $2k (but paid ~$1400 cuz of 30% off gift certificate) for a new 2 cars garage door, new tracks, and opener. I got the Raynor Centura from their Innovations Series due to high R-value.

Our local CostCo has a booth near the exit, guy quoted us $1,200 installed for a standard no-frills 1 car garage door.

Lots of variables in something such as this. Width and height of opening. Clearance issues above can dictate the track needed. Insulated vs. non-insulated. The list goes on.

yea~ i'm trying to gauge a number.. going to get some guys to do an estimate.
I think my garage doors are standard size. 16 x 7 and 8 x 7 both either needs to be replaced or refinished.

The original doors were purchased and installed by sears according to the tag.
I was initially thinking take the paint off the door / refinish and re-do the springs, but I feel like that's going to take me couple months if I only do the weekends to do the work.

I saw the door prices on lowes that were insulated and 16x7 was like $600-700 bucks (seems really low). And I was thinking of making it a weekend project of it. But still haven't decided yet.

Did you do it from a mom and pop or a big box store?

from a mom and pop local dealer. I don't think you can get Raynor brand at a big box store. goto raynor.com, do a dealer locator, they might have some local dealers near you. They are little bit on the high side, I could've gotten a similar door and opener installed for around $1200 to $1400. I probably wouldn't go with them if I didn't have the 30% off.

$1200 for a 2car door, insulated with tracks. I also paid $50 for larger plate thing that spans the panel from top to bottom and bolts to the hinge to keep the opener from pulling the screws out of the door (door is rather big since I got 'heavy insulated.')

had sears come out.

4 grand for both doors reusing our current garage door opener.
Seems very overpriced.

Going to check angieslist as well for some more estimates.

Had two garage doors replaced a few months ago. It was about $1200 installed and hooked up to the existing openers. This included installing new rails.

Got a steel backed, injection insulated (much higher R value), decorative carriage house door - a Haas model 246 L. Looks a little like this one, but with wider carriage style panels, and more panes in our windows. It looks so good we have had cars stop and comment on it, and I love the steel back and insulation. Injection is better than insulated backing.

We also got a Liftmaster 8550 opener w/ battery backup, motion detector, outside keypad, and myQ cell phone monitoring/control. There is a Chamberlain model that is nearly identical except for the color and the rail is split on it (can rattle). I strongly recommend the Liftmaster. It is extremely quiet, lots of features, and reasonably priced.

I think I paid $1500 for everything. Very happy with the purchase. Totally worth it.

Unfortunately all that R value goes out the window, literally, once you put windows on a garage door. If you want a well insulated door don't put windows in it.

Has not been my experience at all. IIRC, my door has double paned windows.

R value is meaningless if the rest or some of the garage is uninsulated. My high R value garage door did not make any diff to the garage temperature in the winter due to the garage walls are not insulated.

having one installed this week. 16x7 old school plywood/particleboard heavier than hell garage door. replacing with a mid tier door, 2 steel layers with Styrofoam inside, 2" door. 9r but not really counting on it for insulation but rigidity and sound absorption. No windows, complete rip and replace, keeping existing garage door opener. about $1100.

I was going to go through the big box stores, but I required a custom sized door and didn't want to worry about the fit being off. I found that Lowe's vs Home Depot were alright, but neither had great ordering systems. I was more limited at Lowe's and restricted to certain door sizes...

I called a local garage door and ordered 2, 9' wide by 7'9" tall doors with obscure privacy glass and R12.75 rating. I want to say it was $1600 installed and that covered brand new tracks, seals, gaskets, etc... They had to come back to make an adjustment because the concrete wasn't 100 level...but at $1600, they didn't have a problem and were easy to work with. (installers vs customer service was great)

Here they are just after they were installed last Fall:

Edit: I need to echo was was said about the windows. The ones in my door are pretty tight in the slots and I can't feel any noticeable air leaks. If you get a quality door, you'll get quality windows... They are double-paned and do well. My doors face West, so I worry more about heat than cold. When the sun beats down on the doors, there's a pretty big difference between the outside and the inside.

I went with a pair of Craftsman belt-drive openers with battery backups, motion sensor, outside remotes... I paid approximately $160 each for them (or less) and bought them when Sears was having a sale + used Ebates to drop the price further. The doors are much slower when on battery, but work great. I believe Chamberlain is who actually makes the openers for Craftsman.

Insulation effects the rate at which the interior temperature changes due to a change in the outside temperature. Your garage still got just as cold but at a slower rate due to the insulated door, so it's not completely meaningless. Without adding heat even the most heavily insulated room will eventually reach the same temperature as outside.

You're right though. It's a little silly to only insulate the door and not the rest of the room.

The other thing to consider is most garage doors are made of metal. The door itself is far more conductive of heat and cold unless it's made of wood or another material. Placing a decent amount of insulation inside of or sandwiched between 2 layers of metal will make a difference in the amount of radiant heat it conducts...as for cold, proper gaskets and seals make a huge difference. When it's 30 degrees outside at night, it's typically 50 degrees in my garage by morning (warmer in the day time). This past winter, when it was 0 degrees outside, it was 28 degrees inside....but that was uninsulated. Different ballgame this coming winter.

I insulated, drywalled, painted, and installed Gladiator garage storage (shelves, cabinets, hooks, bike hangers), etc, in my garage, by myself - about a year before I bought this door. It was work, but turned out nicely.

I wouldnt have messed with getting an insulated door otherwise.

how much mark up are there on garage doors.

I got the 2nd guy come out and give me a quote on a smaller customer door (insulated).

he said it's gonna probably be between 700-900 bucks.. he'll let me know after he gets the numbers back from the factory.

he also told me that my larger 18ft'er (thought it was 16) was gonna be about 1600 bucks.
