Garage floor coating?

I'm moving into a new house the the concrete garage floor looks like it was painted at some point, but its faded/worn out in most places. I'd like to put a coating of paint to cover that up and make it nice and uniform again.

Is my best bet to do an epoxy coating? I'd rather not deal with all the prep I've seen for those unless its easier than people make it out to be.

What are some of my options? What have you used and what were your experiences? Thanks.

There is a "garage floor" paint. It does resist oil and grease, etc. I don't know if it is epoxy based or not....Had it at my previous house, and I think I got it at Lowes or Home Depot....

I've got this on my garage floor and it looks great ... for a week os so. Waly on it, drive on it, whatever and the paint starts lifting or turning black. Only epozy will stay in place, especially under hot tires.

If you are going to put epozy down you will have to (somehow) clean down to bare concrete. This will involve getting the paint up.

I've considered doing this myself but (because of the floor paint I used) I have avoided it.

Good luck ...

here (garage journal) is a good source of info for you. i started researching something like this for my 2-car garage. there are a lot of negative reviews of the homedepot rustoleum epoxy kits. and a lot of prep work is involved for a good epoxy system, grinding, acid etching, etc.

costco is having a sale on their motofloor tiles, 1/3 off. i think its about $2.5/sf. those are simple to install. a checkerboard pattern looks pretty good.

At a hazardous waste company I used to work for we used Anchor garage floor paint on all of our floors. We drove forklifts on it, got all kinds of chemicals on it, a ton of floor dry every single day. It faded over time, and we finally repainted it was never a big deal and I think it lasted fine.

Epoxy and the specific paints are a good idea but the only experience I've had is with this astro-turf like carpet. It works perfectly if you use a rubber mat under the car to avoid soaking the carpet with anything. Comfortable to walk on bare foot and looks really cool. Best part is it doesn't bunch up or anything provided you're backing out in a straight line.

Tonight I'm going to try the Behr single stage epoxy. I'll let you know how it goes. The floor was previously painted so the guy at HD said I didn't need to prime or acid etch. He said not to drive on it for 30 days although he said after 7 days I could put my car on it if I lay cardboard down first. I've pressure cleaned with degreaser etc as prep.

I got the stuff from Lowes, can't remember the brand, but it works great. Got the sandy stuff to put in it for traction, too. Nothing has hurt the surface, yet.

If you live anywhere in the north and get a lot of sand/salt thrown around in the winter, don't bother. Nothing will hold up under those conditions.

No I live in Florida so snow isn't an issue here. I put on a first coat tonight and it looks really nice. Time will tell as far as durability, but it coated nice and looks great.

I waited over the recommended 30 days before putting my car on it and sadly my tires picked up the paint. I would not recommend this product unless you plan on putting some sort of padding down where your parked tires normally end up.
