Just checked status of the backorder I placed with OD and was told that GPS III+ I ordered were a discountinued item and was given the phone number for Garmin to find out were I could buy it...uggh! Oh well:frown:

Those of us on backorder status who ordered on the website for $99 will not get them.

 

I noticed that the GPS III Plus shows back in stock at $289, and I was even able to add it to my cart. However the two I ordered at $98 still show "backordered". Anyone had them honor the backorders?

Just called 1-800-GO-DEPOT and the CSR stated as far as he could tell the backorders are still expected to be fulfilled. Stated that if there wasn't any stock available the system wouldn't have allowed you to place the order in the first place. He called the warehouse where these are supposedly coming from and they might be coming on a shipment for the 27th of Dec. Keeping my fingers crossed...

And when I called 1-800-GO-DEPOT on 12/19, the CSR stated they were in stock and could be released, when I tried to get the $25 off $75 coupon applied, he said just a sec, put me on hold until I was disconnected. Called back and the next CSR (and every CSR after) told me they were a discountinued item and he was instructed by memo to inform me that I needed to call Garmin to find out were I could buy it. BTW, they completely removed it from the web site. Haven't given up hope though

Hopefully discontinued doesn't mean unavailable from the supply chain, and just not going to be sold via their store. Would think if they had no intention on going thru with this they would change the 'backorder' status on the orders on the website. Does everyone else's say: Waiting Backordered Items ? But, has $0.00 for the total?

 

Mine also show "waiting for backordered status" and an amount of $0.00. The price is still the $98.88. The fact that they raised the price on the website to $289 suggests it really wasn't discontinued (I think all of the discontinued stuff ends with .88 in the price).

I was at an OD in MD and saw some guy buy the Etrex display model for $30. So I went to another OD and got them to sell me their display model for $30. Then I got $20 worth of other stuff and use a 10 off 50 coupon. The etrex display models don't really need the box since there is no other hardware (I think). As I said earlier, I don't think the GPS III plus display models are operable, however.

The etrex looks cool wedged between the dashboard and windshield of my car. No mounting needed.

The etrex is still available at some OD's. I tried two display models, but the screen just sits showing the "Wait... locating satellites" screen. It never seems to locate the satellites, even after 30 minutes. Anyone know if this is normal?

I think you have to be outside for it to pickup the sat's

Go outside and in less than 5 minutes you should be locked.
Interestingly enough my old Magellan 2000XL can lock while still inside the house, but the Etrex has always to be outside and have a clear path to the sky.

Thanks! Just after I posted the question, I downloaded the latest manual and that's exactly what it said. The old manual made no mention of this.
