Garmin GPS III PLUS marked down to $ 99.88 at OD

I found a display model in Pikesville, MD. The Garmin III plus rocks. Most display models are non-working, but this was a real one with a box and everything. Don't get too excited when you see one with a fake map on it, I believe those are non-working display models. It has to have a blank screen to be an actual unit.


Does anyone know if we have to use 'mapsource' cds to download maps to this thing or can we use something a little cheaper ?

AndrewR: Which location was that in Atlanta. I had the same thing happen to me. But I think I seen the guy. I seen someone leaving the Jimmy Carter store with one just as I was going in. I had called ahead to check stock, but didn't as them to hold it. I did find one in the hood though. Guess he was scared to go over there. Every other store I call said they had just sold out. I don't believe it though, I think they tell you that once they are holding them for someone else.

Man, this thing is not that straightforward to operate. I guess the funnest thing would be if I am lost in the mountains with the unit, but don't know how to use it. Better bring the manual along all the time.

It looks nice though especially with the two yellow Motorola TalkAbout radios I got a while ago for $10 each.

Rawdog: I was at the Perimeter Pointe location at GA 400 and Abernathy Road (Dunwoody/Perimeter area) at about 1pm. I am friendly with the manager since I go there all the time, and he told me exactly what the guy did in checking all local OD stores for stock, even rattled off the numbers for me roughly (4 here, 2 here, etc.). He told me to save me the trouble of going to them all to check since they were probably cleaned out.

read off a price of 279$ (for the GPS III+)

I seem to be having bad luck on this deal

(although I did get an EMAP deluxe with cables and 8mbcard) for 199$ at OD B&M awhile back.. cheapest anywhere is 250+

ITS nice and is WAY smaller than the gps3+ and hold more info
Still want to have a GPS3+ at that price tho.

I don't think you have to have Mapsource (which costs around $99), most street map or topography prorams that are NMEA compatible should work with the GPSIII+. Microsoft's Streets ($7.88 after rebate at Costco) is NMEA compatible and is probably the cheapest and may be the best. If it doesn't, Costco is real liberal and will mostlikely take it back.

Tell you what.. I have the emap and the mapsource USA cd's..
IF someone has an extra GPS3+ they will sell me, I will help you
out ;> (To get any kinda of detail, you have to have the mapsource cd's.. also for exit info, or any info basically. It comes with a pretty standard map, but is missing FINE detail without the mapsource info.)

Using information from the above website, I made my own cable and just upgraded my firmware to version 2.10 from 2.03. Now it can show you the positions of more than 4 satellites and the received signal intensity from each of them.

www.garmin.com has the updated firmware you can download.

Actually two ODs here in Tallahassee. Went to one and they had the counter tickets right there on the shelf. Four of them left, took one to the register and sorry we don't have anymore. I would say something but it's Sunday.

Important notice!

I just got back from a store with a GPS III plus for 1/2 price! Some prick from this board came in this morning and insisted they give him the unit I had reserved from yesterday. The manager caved and gave him the GPS. Just after the guy left, they brought out ANOTHER GPS III! They said that they had been shipped a LIVE display unit which they never put out (instead putting out the dummy screen one).

The manager gave me the GPS III with everything for $49.88. What this means to you is that they may still have a live display unit that they never put out. They didn't even know it was in the back until one of the floor salesmen was digging around. Ask your store if they have a live display unit in lockup.

Kudos For the OfficeDepot team who went the extra mile.

my dad ordered one last night, called me and told me about it.

i ordered right after he did. so...my GPS III is on backorder
(like many of you) for $99. only time will tell if OD honors
this price.

as a side note, I did some checking here in Reno, NV. I guess
someone did the same thing--raided EVERY SINGLE OFFICE DEPOT
in town, and bought EVERY SINGLE GARMIN he could get his hands
on. he didn't discriminate for model--he purchased every Garmin
that the Reno ODs carried.

Great find, too bad all the OD in central/northern NJ seems to be out.

The store near me would not even sell me the display model, saying that it's not discontinued. I did get a written note from OD quoting the $99 price when new shipment comes in, cross fingers.
