Garmin GPS update $119 WTF?!

Odd since I've been to San Francisco many times and managed to find my way around without a GPS. Didn't even use a map in the car after looking at where I needed to go either from home or at the hotel.

any windows phone can run bing maps.. and i tell you what, the new bing mobile is so damn good it makes my carpc's iguidance software seem crappy. bing gives you free tts now, its pretty much incredible. its one area where microsoft is still handily beating google.

I use both, and Google's nav is superior IMHO.

& I'm not a fan of any particular OS...

The other advantage of the gps when when you make a wrong turn or if a street is closed it can recalculate directions on the fly. I'm sure the cell phone gps do this too. Call me old fashioned, but I just prefer a separate gps, separate camera, separate mp3 player, etc. Sure I'll use my phone for these functions once in a while but at the end of the day I just like having separate devices.

I always say that my Garmin has been one of my favorite tech purchases ever because it truly has enhanced my life. Many of my favorite routes to go places I would have never in a million years found out about without the help of the gps.

I have also been using both regularly and I definately like Google better.
I use what ever my HD2 is runnning at the moment as I've been dual booting.
Google.
- map navigation is just like a regular GPS as you are always seeing straight of where you map is going.
- the maps look much better than Bing.
- the TTS package that was recommended for Google map is not very good.
Bing.
- The maps are always lay out in a N, S, E, W format. Pretty sure Bing is working on it to where you are always looking straight during navigation.
- The TTS is perfect.
- maps not as pretty as Google.
- I like navigating through Bings than Google maps.

unless you have one of their "unsupported devices". my i910 omnia is not one of their supported devices, it updated and now wont work anymore. i uninstalled, reinstalled the older version and it wouldnt work. cleared the reg entries and redid, still cant use the old version of bing. cant even go back to windows search either. kind of pisses me off that it is making me reinstall windows to get the functionality back, when the update could have checked my device ID and told me it wasnt going to work before it installed.

google maps only pisses me off when i am out in the wild without a 3g signal. it was kind of funny following the purple line with white background tho. cache would be a great thing.
