Probably the strongest GPS to get in the US.. The current crop of Magellans are crash-happy and still user-unfriendly. The current crop of TomToms has their quirks (like no automatic power on) and routing issues (Teleatlas maps + strong dislike of left turns).

What's the difference between this and the 780 - I can't see anything from the descriptions or comparison charts on Garmin's site? Also, is the only difference between the 7xx and 8xx series that they added a remote and voice recognition on the 8xx?

Actually, based on your clue, what I found is that the 780 comes with NA maps only, while there are several variants of the 760, one of which is NA maps, and the 780 comes with MSN mobile receiver (outboard) while the 760 comes with an FM traffic receiver (outboard). IOW, I think the units are the same (assuming NA maps), the difference is what type of traffic receiver comes packed with it. (I assume the 780 is NA only because MSN traffic is NA only.)

Interestingly, the list price of the 780 is about $100 higher than the 760, while the list price of the FM traffic receiver is about $100 higher than the MSN traffic receiver - not sure why that is...

They both have MSN direct and FM transmitters. The only difference is that the 780 has a 1yr free of MSN while 760 comes with 3 months trail. I know there was another difference but its not maps, just can't think of what it is at the moment.

They both have FM _transmitters_. The 760 also has an FM (traffic) receiver - an MSN receiver is available but not included, nor is any MSN service. The 780 comes with an MSN receiver - an FM receiver is available but not included. The 780 includes 3 months of MSN service. (All this is per the Garmin web site, and may not be completely accurate WRT the actual units available in retail outlets...)

Nuvi 780 -> Has maps of North America, comes with MSN Direct Receiver + 3 month subscription to MSN Direct.

Nuvi 770 -> Has maps of North America and Europe. Comes with FM TMC traffic receiver. Compatible with MSN Direct.

Nuvi 760 -> Has maps of North America. Comes with FM TMC traffic receiver. Compatible with MSN Direct.

The Nuvi 760 is pretty much a 780 once you buy the MSN Direct receiver for it. It's also a better deal since you get a one year subscription to MSN Direct when you buy the MSN Direct Receiver separately. You also get MSN Direct 2 content with both the Nuvi 760 and 770 if you run Garmin's web-updater on both units. The Nuvi 780 comes with the MSN Direct Receiver and MSN Direct 2 out of the box.

I was right about to jump on this deal when I noticed that amazon has the 760 for only $10 more -- might be the way to go for non-cosco members.

edit: scratch that, they're out of stock.

Costco is seemingly the only retailer that allows you to RETURN a GPS without a restocking fee

Like, in case you find out that you absolutely can't handle Garmin's practice of making you input the house number before the street name, for instance..

It doesn't look like a well navigation system. Recently I got a rent car with it and did too many u-turns. My base car navigation system is much clearer with a lot convenient route options.

Did it have the latest updates / maps? The only problem with the navigation system built into cars is that the dealer / company (Toyota, Ford, BMW, etc.) don't release map / system updates often enough and sometimes never.

So return it to Costco. That's the wonderful thing about buying there.

I think that's what I'm going to do. I emailed costco CS to ask about canceling it since it hasn't shipped, but I think I'm going to go ahead and buy ti from amazon in the meantime.

Best buy link

Coupon

Interestingly, the best buy page explicitly says the FM traffic receiver is not included (even though the Garmin website shows that as a feature of the 760). The costco page doesn't really say one way or the other, but the detailed model number they show (GRM0065710) seems to match up with the $360 one on Amazon, which explicitly says the FM traffic receiver _is_ included.

Has anyone had a chance to check at a best buy to see whether it has it or not?
