Gas Grill Recommendations

I learned that I'm getting a new propane grill for father's day. Anybody got any suggestions on one in the $199-249 range?

I already have a round Weber charcoal grill that I use but its kind of small and a little inconvenient to use as opposed to a gas grill.

I already have a gas grill, but I'm going to get a little round Weber charcoal grill because they produce food that tastes better.

That said, I've got a Thermos gas grill that works pretty well and wasn't very expensive. It's gas. You're not going to get very good flavor or cooking out of it, so there's little point in spending a lot of money on them. Buy the cheapest one that's big enough to cook everything you want to cook.

Then save your money and buy a Traeger.

I would trade size for quality if necessary. It'd be better to get a smaller grill that lasts than a cheapo 4-burner grill that rusts and falls apart in a year.

My parents just bought a Charbroil grill and it seems pretty nice. From what I could tell, it was hotter at the back than the front, but it doesn't flare up at all and it heats up very quickly. I really liked it - it's not all wobbly like a cheap grill, either. Yeah, might not find one in his price range, but IMO, Weber gas grills are worth spending a bit more to have.

Weber. Anything else is fail.

Webers get hotter, they heat more evenly, and they last alot longer than any of the cheap wannabe grills. My parents have one that is about 15 years old and it still works like the day they bought it. Mine is going on 4 years and still works perfectly. I went through 3 different cheapo brands (charbroil etc...) in a matter of 5 years through college.

No tax, and free shipping...so it's not *as* far out of your price range as it could be. But it's a brilliant little grill for tree fiddy.

i agree with the above that,if practical, I would trade size for quality. I have a mid-large size Sears branded (maybe a kenmore) that I bought about 2 yrs ago.

In comparison to my bro's Weber Genesis (high end model) the sheet metal is flimsy, the red paint has faded(S. Tx sun, to be fair), the flare shields are thin and starting to rust and the grill bars are thinner.

with all that being said, I paid about 80% less than he did (less than 400, thank you very much FW).

lastly, we marinade almost everything we grill, so the taste is really good. we don't get the charocoal-added flavoring, but it's not practical to start and then wait for a charcoal fire 2 nights a week after I get home from work.

I'll second vi edit's recommendation of the Weber Q320. It may be a tad higher than your target price range, but it is a FANTASTIC grill. I have had mine for 3 years now and LOVE it. It is plenty big enough for us (family of 3 but we have guests over often) without being HUGE. With the shelves folded down it has a nice small footprint that doesn't take up a lot of space on my deck.

Also, the kettle is cast aluminum and the stand is ABS plastic, so it will not rust out on you in a few years like cheap gas grills. You can even undo four screws and take the top off and throw it in the trunk for a trip to the park as long as you take a propane tank as well (I bought a "Baby-Q" (Q100) for my camper that fits this purpose).

We bought a Sears 4 burner that was highly rated for lower price grills and while it cooks great it is cheap Chinese built junk. After 2 years all 4 burner back mount points have rusted off, the pegs that hold the burner covers are loose from rust. Next one will be a Weber.

I cheaped out when I bought my gas grill and now I regret it. Got some cheap thing from Home Depot that was on super sale. Hot and cold spots galore. It works but is pretty terrible. It's also already starting to look like shit even though I clean and maintain it pretty well.

When its time to buy a new one I'm just getting a Weber and being done with it.

Since buying the Weber Q 100, I haven't considered using my charcoal grill. This portable grill heats up fast, cooks evenly, and I can finally rely on the times specified in recipes without checking the grill all the time. The cart that is sold with the Q is a gem also. This grill has more than enough space to cook for 4-6 people.

A few years ago, I was given one. And my 700 series Weber charcoal grill hasn't been used very much since then.

Curious how many of you who have had the cheap ones just left them outside year round?

My parents have had a cheap gas grill for almost 10 years now (think it was around 150 bucks) and it still works perfect with minimal rust. They fully clean it every 2-3 weeks when its out and store it in the garage when they know it wont be used.

I got a Char-Griller brand from lowes and its worked perfect the last 2 months. No rust showing and it heats up quick and evenly. only dislike it the stupid thermometer is out of whack (says the internal temp is ~600F after turning it on for 1 minute). As for it vs a Weber. I didnt notice any difference using mine vs going to a friends who had a weber (not sure which model though).

Do not get the Summit Series. Get Genesis! back when I bought mine, there was enough reason to do the upgrade in terms of build quality.

If you can, consider getting a natural gas line installed for the BBQ. Great investment that will save money in the long run. NG was a lot cheaper than propane last time I checked, and there's no risk of running out while cooking.

I know it's outside your budget, but if you're going to get propane, get an infrared grill.
