I went side to side since it would give more consistent heat.Front to back because, it maximizes usable grill area for different temp. zones.

Meh, this is AT. I replace my grill when it gets dirty. It really does come down to how you use your grill. One other thing though, having side to side burners would most likely increase replacement cost.

Bah...just buy a quality gas grill.
My weber is about 8 years old. Last year, I contacted Weber about some warranty replacment parts. (cookbox had warped a bit) They replaced EVERYTHING...box, lid, burner assembly...EVERYTHING.
I found the original burners were still completely intact...no "burn through" around any of the holes...nothing but some heat discoloration and burned on grease.
I went ahead and put in the new burners even though the old ones were still good.
The old Sears grills and other brands...I was lucky to get more than two seasons out of a set of burners.
My Weber has side-to-side and I prefer it. The control knobs stay cleaner. (no dripping sauces/grease)
