I demand my burners be in a zig-zag pattern!

(although 45 degree zig-zags would be acceptable)

Front to back. In this set up you have more indirect heat in the center of the grill. You could also just go a head and buy a Big Green Egg.

It really does come down to how you use your grill. One other thing though, having side to side burners would most likely increase replacement cost.

Bah...just buy a quality gas grill.

My weber is about 8 years old. Last year, I contacted Weber about some warranty replacment parts. (cookbox had warped a bit) They replaced EVERYTHING...box, lid, burner assembly...EVERYTHING.

I found the original burners were still completely intact...no "burn through" around any of the holes...nothing but some heat discoloration and burned on grease.
I went ahead and put in the new burners even though the old ones were still good.

The old Sears grills and other brands...I was lucky to get more than two seasons out of a set of burners.

Meh, this is AT. I replace my grill when it gets dirty.

I spent most of a day driving around, $20 in gas and, $20 in repair to save me from having to buy a new smoker. Damn proprietary parts, there's simply no way to discuss them without having the part in front of you.

Same here, I used to replace burner after burner, stainless, cast iron, even bronze didn't last then I was lucky and got a Weber on CL for $100, less than a year old, guy's wife was pissed that it didn't include a side burner so he sold it, I've had to replace the cooking grates, (once) for $28, I've had it 5 years now, everything still works perfectly, all one needs to to it clean it once in a while and your good to go..

I said left to right. A.

I like having a cold zone and you could with that configuration. My current grill is a cheap 2 burner and has a single heat deflector that covers both sides.... It allows me to shut one burner down and half of the grill will just about stop cooking when I do. It's pretty good for controlling steaks.

My Weber has side-to-side and I prefer it. The control knobs stay cleaner. (no dripping sauces/grease)

Front to back makes creating different zones easier. You can do it on a side to side as well, but lining up the food is harder.

I have a new Weber which is front to back, and it's much nicer than my old Weber, which was side to side.
