The whole industry is a huge price fixing game.

Here the local stations actually call each other to set the price, so it's even higher than the globally fixed price. Basically it's price fixed twice.

Not complaining that it's low now, but complaining that we paid more all this time and they now decide to bring it this low. When we were paying more it was all pure profit going in the pockets of the big CEOs. Heck, they could probably bring it down even more if they really wanted to. Gas prices are all driven by political agendas. In this case, I think they're trying to sell cheaper than Russia, or something like that. Not really relevant what the specific reason is it just comes to show that the normal prices are all fixed for maximum profit.

In Quebec/NB/NS all the gas stations had the same price throughout the provinces from what i saw, however the price was easily 15 or 20 cents more than southern Ontario (Quebec being most expensive)

It's under $2.30 in parts of Connecticut now. They'll probably need to raise taxes elsewhere to make up for the loss in gas tax revenue.

Or, they could just try to cut spending.... nah. I don't think that the state government even knows how try doing that.

I thought that most gas taxes were just a fixed dollar amount, not a percentage of the current price?!?!

Many states recently switched to a percentage including Indiana.

I'll find a link about for you.

They call it Gas Use Tax

California went to this system on the same day.

Indiana gasoline use tax goes into effect July 1, replaces gas sales tax

Gas prices could be changing starting July 1, when a gasoline use tax law kicks in.
It replaces the prepaid sales tax on gas collected by gas stations.

The Indiana Department of Revenue will calculate a rolling, monthly statewide average cost of a gallon of gas, and then add seven percent.

Gas stations will include the gasoline use tax in the price at the pump. The tax rate may change monthly based on the average Indiana retail price of gasoline.

All those jobs were created by creating an artificial tax on the working class and poor. F everyone who profited off gas.

According to this article, the main source of additional employment since 2008 was the shale industry:

http://ourfiniteworld.com/2015/01/06/oil-and-the-economy-where-are-we-headed-in-2015-16/

The problem is that the industry needs high prices due to higher production costs.

Also, we are seeing volatility in other markets, which means we may be looking at the start of economic crisis similar to what happened in 2009 due to a credit crunch. In this case, the cause might be the end of quantitative easing.

two stations are battling prices here in Denver, one of them hit $1.51 yesterday

the drive for $5 is not at all alive!

Between the over inflated market, overprices houses and people buying SUV's because of cheap gas the fallout for this bubble is going to be HILARIOUS!!

Heh, wow. I'd be perfectly happy if it just stayed at $3 for years, but $1.50 is silly cheap.

$1.93 here now. It hasn't been dropping as fast as it had been, but still dropping slowly.

$2 a gallon isnt exactly "super cheap". I once pulled into a gas station on empty with no money, gathered 57 cents from under my seats, and used that change to buy enough gas to drive 27 miles, and the needle still read higher than it was when I left the station. This was in 1993.

You know 1993 was 22 years ago right?

why does wallstreet keep harping about how bad this is for economy? I'd think this would be great for other businesses and consumers.

Is this a rhetorical question? Low energy prices are great for everyone but energy companies, but they're such a powerful lobby that it seems like everyone is worried by cheap energy. The only real complication is that the prices aren't trending down gradually, they're volatile, and volatility is never good for anyone but speculators.

They seem to be going down more gradually (or about the same rate) as they went up a few years ago.
