This is just a little comparison. I posted this in another thread which was quickly locked up because it was advertising some scheme.

For 4/10/2006:

Including Taxes:
Belgium: $6.10
France: $5.80
Germany: $5.96
Italy: $5.91
Netherlands: $6.73
UK: $6.13
US: $2.88

Excluding Taxes:
Belgium: $2.33
France: $2.15
Germany: $2.14
Italy: $2.34
Netherlands: $2.61
UK: $2.10
US: $2.50

Net Taxation:
Belgium: $3.77
France: $3.68
Germany: $3.82
Italy: $3.57
Netherlands: $4.12
UK: $4.03
US: $0.38

Therefore, all of you people complaining about the price of gas in <insert country here> and then saying how well we have it in America can please be quiet. Just because our government doesn't rape us at the pump doesn't mean we have anything to "feel thankful for". In fact, I pity you. I pity you because you constantly feel the need to downplay our complaints about gas prices here. So what, you're paying $6.00/gal, is that our fault? Look how good you could have it if you didn't love bending over and taking it every time you fill up your tank. Pre-tax gas over in Europe is much lower than what it is over in America, and what do you get for all of those taxes? Sub-par socialized medicine? Is that worth it? Oh well, whatever helps you sleep at night knowing you're being taken.

Anyone who wishes to dispute these numbers can take it up with the United States Department of Energy

I'm not sure if I'd rather be taxed to death, or price gouged. Neither of them are very good.

Price gougers don't arrest you if you refuse to pay them. Not to mention, does price gouging take up large percentages of your income?

Not only that, most of the Countries are the size of Rhode Island and they don't travel far so they don't spend a lot in gas anyway.

I know that comment about being the size of Rhode Island is a joke, but in that case what's the point of the ultra expensive gasoline?

It makes money so they can pay for their extensive social programs, and it encourages people to take the train, which is actually a feasible alternative in Europe, unlike in the US.

That's true, it discourages people from driving, but you're right, it's nearly impossible here. We're too spread out and the local transportation systems only run so far. Then you have AMTRAK, which is a total joke.

I prefer the opposite. Who pays for road maintenance? New roads, signage, signals? As it is gas taxes aren't enough to support those things. General revenue funds are used to supplement gas taxes for the shortfalls.

Right, because here in the US our roads are falling apart, no new roads are being built, and our signals are left broken

You don't need massive taxes to pay for things like that.

Hey Hitler. Is what your saying is its cool for gas to go really really high to the point not only cant I put food on the table anymore but now because of prices were starving and can afford to even make it to work just so we can establish a mass transit across the USA? Looking to make this a country where all of our freedoms are gone because all we can now do is pay to get to work and back and maybe have a little left over for food for our children. Not everyone is well off where a spike to $4 isnt that big a deal but it is when your making min wage to get by on and because there isnt a mass transit program how do you choose between money for gas but no food or food but no gas to get to work and then lose job?

What makes you think that if prices keep going up that we would afford the price hike of the ticket to ride the mass transit because of the spike in fuel? What makes you think that if it keeps going up they can afford to even stay in busness? Keeps going up and how are we going to afford the higer food prices AND higher fuel prices? Cost of food will go up with the price of fuel to get it to the stores and who do you think makes up for it? The consumer. So little Johny school field trip to the musem is off for there isnt enough in the budget for gas guess your going to have to look on line to see what they HAD to offer. Sorry my son no more internet I had to use that money to get to work. Keeps going like this and im seeling the computer and whoring out your sister and mother so you can have bread and water.

So to all that go whooo hoo yea for higher gas prices to show them to take public transportation can suk my left nut. Where I live most of the stuff is 30 minutes away. NO BUSSES, NO TRAINS, NO TAXI, and 30 min away is walmart where everyone works and makes a whoping $8 an hour. Yeah they going to have alot left to take care of the family after they pay the gas to get to and from work arnt they :disgust:

Looks like Europe is cheaper than the US once you take out their socialist taxes. I'd kill to pay $2.48/gal

Start lining up the arabs

You know what's an interesting study in human behavior? The fact that a lot of what I assume are intelligent people looked at that data and got all pissed off at Europe for being a bunch of communists, while nobody took the time to look at the data the OP linked to in order to notice that gas prices have gone up 2.5x in the past 4 years. Now maybe it's just me, but personally I'm more pissed about that than what the Europeans choose to do in their own countries.
