My owners manual states that my car requires premium gas, and that regular grade gas should only be used in an emergency.

Also, keep in mind that percent wise, premium is actually getting cheaper and cheaper as gas prices go up. Hell, it's a pretty standard 10-12 cent increase per grade per gallon, and it was like that back when gas was less then half the price it is now even... so by percent of sale, the extra really isn;t adding up to much

Assuming that you filled your car once per week and it was an extra $5 / fill for premium, you're looking at $260 year extra.

If you are driving a vehicle that requires premium gasoline, and an extra $260 puts a strain on your finances, you either shouldn't be driving the car you do, or you have a bigger problem in that you are spending way too much money in other places.

It's like complaining that you can't afford $50 a month for a cellphone and then spending $100 a week at the bar.

umm no not really.

$3/fillup more is a dangerous increase?

that is a 3 buck in crease from now, but what about 2 years ago when gas was $1.40 a gallon and now is over 3 bucks a gallon for premium and it depends on how much you fill up and what you allocated in your budget for gas, that 3 bucks has to come from someplace. Anyway that is a discussion for another thread. lets keep it on topic.

Its always a $3/tank increase. When regular gas was $.90, premium was $1.10. Now that regular gas is $2.49/gallon, premium is $2.69/gallon. Still a 20 cent difference, still $3 a tank.

pwned

You are not getting the point. It used to cost me $19 to fill up my car with premium. It now costs $34 to fill it with regular. Thats a $15 dollar difference. If I use premium now it would be $19 more than it used to be. Thats quite a bit more than $3 per fill up increase in a few years. This money has to come from somewhere and saving $3 each time helps. I drive a V8 TransAm and have no problems at all using 87octane. My engine is fine.

what?

if you were using regular in the first place it would have cost you 16.5 bucks. (1.1 @15 gal). Now it would cost you 42 (2.8 @15). IF you have always pumped premium, it would have cost you 19.5 (1.3 @15). Now it would cost you 45. The difference that you paid before over somebody who was pumping regular gas was 3 dollars. the difference you are paying over somebody who is pumping regular gas NOW is 3 dollars.

Assuming you pump once a week, that's 144 dollars a year. If you blow up ONE engine in 20 years you LOST money because you didn't want to spend the extra $3 at the pump.

Let me answer that by asking you this: At what point did you become retarded, or were you born that way?

That's why you keep a few bottles of octane booster in the trunk.

Not if it means fvcking up my engine. I have to put in premium cuz of my supercharger. And not I didnt put it in, it came stock.

Same here. I might as well put in what's recommended, I don't care about saving $3-4 per tank if it might mean problems down the road.

Never. My car requires premium fuel. If I put less than premium in, it will ruin the catalytic converters and result in a huge repair bill.

Now that is one of the silliest things in this whole entire thread. Putting regular in a modern car designed for premium makes the computer retrad the timing, among other settings, letting it run on the regular, usually at a price of performance. It'll do nothing to damage your catalytic converter......it's just an inert "muffler" that uses noble metals to convert one set of gasses to another (NOx, CO to CO2 and H2O typically). If anything, your car will run leaner and give the converter an easier job.

Not a problem for me...the new 'stang was designed to pump out 300 ponies with 87 octane - though I won't be doing the computer retune anytime soon that would unleash another 20+ HP with 91+ octane.

Isn't it obvious???????

20 gallon tank.

28 mpg per tank with premium = 560 miles
24 mpg per tank with regular = 480

A difference of 80 miles.

At 24 mpg = 3.3 extra gallons per tankful are needed to get the same distance.

At 2.20/gal an extra $7.26 per tank of regular to equal premium.

Meaning the difference needs to be 36.3 cents to break even. Any difference to the computer/car/engine/going against the octane level the engine was designed, manufactured, tested for withstanding.

The gist is premium is always X amount above regular and rarely changes. For some this seems to be difficult to understand. I reference a post above comparing the price of premium in 2005 to the cost of regular in 1985.

The math is not strong in this thread.

I'm NOT saying premium is better gas...I'm just saying if your car requires it, it requires it for a reason. In my particular case mileage and emissions are the reasons.

I SAVE money by using premium.

I've been using 89 octane gas in my 12 year old Camry that requires premium...no ill effects.

How is your mileage?

Seems to be about the same when I used to put premium. Car still has decent pickup on the freeway too.
