Just because gasoline is more expensive in other countries, that doesn't mean that it isn't too expensive here.

Yes, because it is practical to ride a bike forty miles to work.

You can rectify that by not living in the suburbs...

And have every city look like New York with it's high rise apartments. No thanks, I like the peace and quiet of the suburbs.

People tend to forget that other countries, especially Europe tax their gas/diesel at over 60%. Taxes for the loss.

Hell, does that make Venenzuela great with it $0.12 per gallon (yes, $0.12 per gallon) cheap (even though it's subsidized with oil revenues - reverse of taxation)???

I might have had to stay living on campus if it was that expensive. Where I'm at now, getting to campus by bus would cost at least twice as much as it does by car, and take almost 4x as long. After walking a half mile to get to the bus stop, the bus route would take me all the way to downtown Erie, where I'd have to transfer to another bus that'd take me back to the college.
And of course, if gas prices were higher, the bus fare would also be higher.

I would love to have a smaller car. As Rubycon put it recently, we use 4000lb vehicles to move a person around who is perhaps somewhere around 200lbs. I do like the idea of having some sort of protective cage around me while I'm whizzing around town at considerable speed, but really, a lot of my car is just empty space most of the time.

I have no problems with increasing the gas tax if it were used responsibly. Using it to cover more subsidies to the oil companies is not. They are already showing the most profitable quarters of any company ever.

I certainly have a problem with it. How about we spend less money and actually cut taxes?

Nobody twisted your arm and made you live 40 miles away from work.

put it in persepctive: in Europe, train travel is king.

In England, many people have never been to the far reaches of the country, and it's only the size of a small state. People may live their whole lives without travelling the distance that in the US may only get you midway across the country. The certainly aren't driving 50 miles one way to work like many Americans have to.

You're assuming people never change jobs.

I waited for a good sale on a bigger 4x4 truck I wanted. With gas so high, you can get a really good deal on a big V8 engine now. Work an extra 8 hours a week, to pay for the extra on the new truck and increase in gas costs. I only live 7.5 miles from work, so I am pretty lucky that a gas hog does not affect me that much.
