All the carriers currently active in the US fleet are (the last oil feuled one was decomissioned in the last 2 years).

As the price of crude oil start to get really high, we in the rest of the western world can lower our taxes and keep our prices at about the same of what we have now, YOU on the other hand has to get used to continously increasing gas prices.

Using 40% of the world's energy production is perhaps not such a good thing after all?

Exactly. The economies will grind to a halt if they don't and they know it, would it come to that. They have no other choice. Your government have no choice either, other than perhaps invade Iran and Saudi Arabia in the search for WMD.

The issue with the rising oil/gas prices is hardly limited to how much extra it costs to fill your gas tank. Most people will be able to deal with the additional cost of filling up the tank. Yes, we'll gripe about it, but we can deal with it. The problem is that the price of gas is factored into just about everything in the economy, so as it climbs it might start seriously affecting the growth of the economy.

Certainly we're not at 'panic button' levels yet, but it's something to keep an eye on. Wall street certainly is. If this continues, we might have to 'liberate' Venezuela or Saudi Arabia soon to protect us from their WMD (oil).

Joking aside, European countries need more import oil than the US. The US imports about 50% of its crude oil. Germany and France on the other hand, have to import almost all of their oil. So I really don't see the majority of western European countries to pay less at the pump than what we currently have, even in California. While the US drive too many pickups, which consume a lot of gas, people will pick more fuel efficient cars if they really think that gas is too expensive. So Americans still have a choice to drive more fuel efficient cars, while the Europeans are praying for tax reliefs from their government, good luck.

You don't really get my point. Europeans will never pay less than we do now, I'm trying to point out that we have better choices than you when the price for oil really takes off.

We can also start using better cars while at the same time many people can start using public transportation upon which many of our cities' transportation system are based. Sure, they are in no way optimal but at least they work. America is built upon cars and broad freeways, Europe is not.
