Happened for me after Hurricane Katrina. I bought a used Saturn that replaced a Ford Explorer as my daily driver. Just over a year later I moved on to my Insight and haven't looked back. I still keep a used Chevy pickup for utility and off road use, but I drive the car 10X more often.

I own a big gas guzzling F-150 because I pull a 7k lb trailer constantly for a high school robotics team. In fact in three weeks I'll be dragging it to St. Louis. That will be a nice change, because last year it was Atlanta. But I'm sure a Fiesta or a Focus could pull that trailer through the mountains. Plus I pull my horrible fuel inefficient sailboat. My next door neighbor has a big new Sierra heavy duty. He uses it to move the 4 wheelers and jetski's that he uses for his daily job - he's a DNR agent.

The farm down the street has no less than 4 F-150's. The person at the end of the street has 1 F-150 and one Excursion, which he uses to pull the horse trailers he owns and makes his living from.

I'm sorry YOUR reality is not MY reality. And I thank you for keeping YOUR reality to yourself.

Buy the car you want. Shut the hell up about what I'm driving. Go dictate to your little homeowner's associate what color all the picket fences should be and where people should be allowed to put their hose reels. I moved to the country to get away from overzealous overbearing know-it-alls like you.

As gas prices continue to rise, I wonder, how high do the prices have to get before people will be willing to give up their gas guzzling SUVs and pickup trucks in favor of smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles and/or SUV hybrids?

Does anyone else feel that it's a little bit obscene to see someone driving alone in a large SUV or pickup truck when they aren't using it for anything other than to drive around town or to and from work? Maybe it's just a sense of egalitarianism or proletariat envy on my part, but as the gas prices continue to rise and with my understanding that the amount of oil in the world is finite and will eventually run out, I find it a bit unseemly if not rude.

So, guys, what's it gonna take? $4/gallon (coming this summer or next summer)? $5/gallon? $6/gallon?

well, since i drive a 4cyl sports coupe and a motorcycle, it'd probably take something like $6-8/gal to really start hitting me hard.

no need for a stupid useless vehicle here (credit to julesmaximus )

I can't believe I'm posting in P&N....

I don't really care that they're guzzling down the gas. My subaru isn't exactly sipping either when I could have gotten say a camry or accord.

Let them drive what they want, the economics will hit them eventually. Just make it very financially prohibitive by fining the fuck out of all the god damn lifted trucks/suvs/anything out there. Its already illegal, lets actually enforce the fact that that lifted shiny bumper is now at face level for anyone not in a lifted vehicle themselves instead of actually abiding by safety/crash regulations.

I don't care about the ricers who lower their cars since they're choosing to decapitate themselves, not others.

we wont have to worry. in 20 years or even less we will be off gasoline. look at how good the Chevy Volt is doing or the new Chevy car that was released that gets 42mpg and its not a hybrid.

Facts:

1) Chevy Volt is hardly selling anything at all (600 last month, under 2000 cars total since it came out five months ago)
2) The other chevy car you refer to is the Cruze, which gets 42 mpg on the highway only and with the manual transmission only. 28 mpg city. It gets 33 mpg combined: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm and 30 combined (26 mpg city) for the automatic.

I dont have an SUV but my S10 is a gas hog.
Price of fuel is mostly irrelevant. I cant afford to get rid of the car. If gas goes up in price much more it will just sit in my driveway and I'll have to hitchhike. But the truck will always be there until I can get a job and a loan for something new.

Did anyone purchase an SUV or pickup truck over the past 3 or 4 years, and if so, are you surprised that the prices are going up again? Do you think it was a mistake now?

I purchased a SUV recently and I am not suprised gas prices went up. I do not think it was a mistake. There are waaaaay too many things I have put in it I couldn't have fit in a car
Short list:
Soda fountain
2x4s,2x6s,2x8s,2x10s
plywood
insulation
Hay
hutch
bookshelves
copious other amounts of materials

Not to mention all the things I plan on carrying with it in the next couple of years

1) I get 10' 2x4s in my 2002 Honda Civic all the time. It isn't even a hatchback or anything. Just a standard car. Just fold down the back seats, and angle them in through the trunk. I've also gotten 700 sq ft of wood flooring (although it was nearly scraping the ground under the weight), plywood cut in half, dozens of large chairs (awkard but they fit upside down in the back seat, two at a time), a 32" CRT TV, shelving, my kitchen table (although it is a smaller table), etc. Cars fit a lot more than you think. About the only things on your list that wouldn't fit would be plywood (it would have to be cut to about 38" wide instead of the standard 48") and probably the hutch.

2) With the current price of gas, and the typical 12000 miles per year driving, and a Civic getting 33 MPG vs 18 MPG for an SUV, a driver would save $1060 a year. I could rent a $20 Menards truck every week to move anything big and still be cheaper than the extra cost of gas in the SUV (not to mention the cheaper cost of the vechicle, insurance, etc). I have rented a Menard's truck now and then for drywall or for a sod cutter. It is quick, easy, and cheap.

You aren't thinking about the big picture and all your options.

Cars in North America are gas guzzling piles of shit.

British Honda Civic
optional 2.2L diesel engine. 138hp, 251ft-lb, 42.8 imperial mpg in the city, top speed 127mph
That thing is probably a lot of fun to drive.

Whoever thought of fold down back seats is awesome. I managed to get a huge ass desk (unassembled) in my Honda Civic when the seats were folded. Hatchbacks are even better for this.

I just wish the back bumper would go up about 2" less or that the barrier between the trunk and the car was about 2" higher. Then I'd be able to get big thick things in like a hutch. As it is, they need to be under about 1 foot tall or be partly bendable to fit. But if I had those extra 2", then I'd be able to get almost anything in the civic.

I concur. Convenience. Yes, I could rent a truck every weekend to haul stuff but do I want to deal with driving to pick-up the vehicle, do delivery, return vehicle. I've fit washing machines, refrigerators, 20 bags of mulch, 6 replacement windows, bath tub, etc. in my SUV.

I will always have a SUV type vehicle. It's cheaper to drive up north with four people, cargo and several dogs in one vehicle than driving two vehicles. Plus, I'll feel a whole lot safer when someone runs a red light or stop sign than if I was driving a Honda Fit.

This year, I will be replacing my current SUV with a new one or at worst a Subaru Outback though it only has 31" of cargo room height.

You aren't thinking about the big picture and all your options.

First off - I cannot fit 2x10x12' in my wife's civic.
Second - I cannot fit 2x8x12' in my wife's civic
Third - your 32" CRT was not as big as the soda fountain machine. It would not have fit in a civic (Hell - I had less than 1" of clearance in my SUV on the sides and NO clearance from bed to roof)
Fourth - The book shelf would not have fit in my wife's civic
Fifth - I do not drive 120000 miles a year
Sixth - There is no Menard's around here
Seventh - Lowes charges $20 plus gas. Their truck gets less MPG than my SUV. The hutch, bookshelves, soda fountain etc were not located locally

I have had my SUV for 19 months and have driven 12,576 miles (Edit: Err...It might be 13,576 - I can't remember but I am about 2,000 miles short of my third oil change that I get every 5,000 miles)). Now it gets tough to compare the exact milage driven because we do take my SUV to go get things that we would have had to rent a vehicle before to do in places up to 100 miles away.

My rough estimate of renting the trucks to go get the various items (going off of Uhaul's MPG and capacity listings. (4) 100 mile trips @ $122 per trip+ 6 [minimum] trips to lowes at $32 per trip) comes to about $700

I will gladly pay $360/year for the convinence of going to Lowes - picking up a single 12' 2x4xwhatever because I measured or cut wrong and not having to rent a vehicle or impose on a friend or being able to instantly know I can snag that $2500 soda fountain machine for $150 because it can fit in my car right then and there [if you really want you can factor in the savings of the soda machine. Used they go for $2500. I got it for $150. Realistically I would have gone for a smaller one (I am still trying to come up with ideas to use all 8 spouts) for around $600]

Please be assured - I spent a large amount of time going over our plans to see about how much renting would cost. I then went through a large number of SUV reviews seeing what MPG I could get for the type of vehicle I was willing to buy.

So - please take your assumptions that I did not think about the big picture and all the options and STFU

That would be my only reason for keeping with an SUV through higher gas prices. If we can have security and high gas mileage, good for us, but until we do you know which one loses out.

i have had a full size(2 door tahoe->4 door yukon->02 z71 tahoe currently) SUV since i've been 16. i feel safer in it. i had a wreck last week where some young girl pulled out in front me. i t-boned her, totaled her car and i didn't even have a scratch on me. got some front-end damage but i'm glad i was in my SUV for that reason alone. also i have a boat and show me a car that's going to pull a god damn boat.

i have a moped i drive. i also drive a small sunfire every now and then.

i LOV my SUV. if you don't like them, that's fine. at least stop crying(not directed to OP, only cry babies).

Good mileage vehicle + cheap pickup seems more like what you need then. You might not be able to do that for various reasons though.

Entirely due to limited availability.

Total 2011 production was originally supposed to be 10K but it's getting pushed to 25K due to demand.

the price of energy effects all goods and services. At what point will you have no choice but to down size your life because you can't afford to keep the lights on or can't afford to heat your home? Soon you'll be deciding between food?? or lights and heat.
