Whitehouse spokesman just said that 21 ships are coming from Europe and the Middle East with 500,000 barrels of gasoline "EACH" on the way to the US as we speak.
So will this HELP?

Short term (until we can get the refineries back online), yes.

Does not the US run through a few million barrels a day?

But we haven't LOST ALL of our gasoline production. Just a fraction. But a fraction, when you're at 96% capacity, is all it takes.

IIRC, it's about 1.4 million barrels per day lost right now. Those 21 ships contain 10 million barrels. That will last a week or so and allow more refineries to come back online. Also, winter gasoline in storage, has been allowed to be rolled out early. It will ease the price short term, but the flip side is it will created shortages of winter gasoline in the winter.

Unless refinery capacity is increased in the US, it's going to be a non-winnable war anyway.

How is that going to help? You still have the same amount of oil/gas out there. Plus, most stations these days just mix regular and premium to get the middle grade, so refineries don't have to make it.

oh ok i thought the refineries made the mid-grade gas
but even so wouldnt there be more regular and premium gas if they didnt use them both to make mid grade??

Yes, there will be more regular and premium, but still the SAME overall amount of gas. As long as you have the same demand, the same TOTAL amount of gas will be used, whether it is 3 grades or 2 grades. The only way to get more gas is to increase production or people have to use less. I hope people start using less, but I don't see that happening too much until prices remain high.

Today on MSNBC a report stated our nations gasoline supply has decreased by 10%. So if there is no gouging by the oil companies why have prices far exceeded 10%?

Just paid $2.69/gal for premium last night at the local Costco. It's $2.49 for regular. Regular gas stations in Salt Lake were running anywhere from $2.79 to $2.89/gal for regular and $2.99 to 3.09 for premium.

It was un-fvcking believable how long the lines were. I waited about 25 minutes to fill up at non-gouging prices.

Because every dumbass American went out this week and filled up EVERY car they own to try and get the cheaper gas. People were seeing $4-5 prices on TV and freaked out. Demand went up big time this week, while the supply went down. Law of supply & demand.

Who want's to start another mass email saying the country is running out of gas?

Yesterday morning, gas by me was $2.79. When I came home from work it was $3.19, $3.29 and $3.49, regular 87 octane at 3 stations, all on the same block. Should be interesting this afternoon.

But if no one buys gas on one particular day, all of the prices will drop. Right ?

I am glad I don't have to worry about paying for heating oil, this winter will be very expensive in that respect. Think gas prices are high, wait for nat. gas and heating oil prices later this year. You are very smart to lock in a rate, everybody should do that if they can.
