I wouldn't say Intel is a monopoly like Microsoft. In the recent Steam HL2 survey it showed that the AMD/Intel split was near 50/50. Either way, more competition is good for us!

But 90% of business computers (75% of which are Dell's) probably aren't going to be participating in a "gaming" survey.

I know, but we're all gamers here, and we know better than any person working at a work computer about the insides of our comps. We also know that AMD puts out just as good of products and Intel and that Intel is in no way a monopoly. Since home users take computers as much more of a hobby than anything and keep more up to date, I'd say that we know more about this situation. Among gamers the split is around 50/50, and the gamers are the people usually keep up with the latest hardware and trends, which shows that there still IS competetion in the CPU market.

They are definately dominant, but they arent anti-competitive, and they dont control enough aspects of the market to constitute a monopoly.
Lets see, Microsoft won;t release their 64 bit OS until Intel comes out with a 64 bit chip, and they "determine" what end up being standards like SSE,SSE2,SSE3, etc... I would say they pretty much control the market. And gamers constitute a small portion of the total market. If gamers were the whole market, Intel wouldn't have such big profits. They are close enough to a monopoly for me to call them one. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, and I have some basis for mine at least.....

Yes, I downloaded it and installed it, and yes it is OK, but no drivers for almost anything. I can't even connect to the internet or have sound. Everybody says they won;t come up with drivers until Microsoft releases it. And I never used or implied conspiracy, I said monopoly, big difference.

However - you HAVE to admit, from a market share standpoint, business computing FAR outstrips enthusiast computer as far as quantity goes. Essentially, we are a minority.

A monopoly is a giant company that uses underhanded methods to remain in its dominant position... so you are implying intel is strongarming MS into not releasing WXP-64 until they have 64bit active on prescotts? thats the way i took it, and it sounds like a conspiracy theory.

honestly I don't know why dell would go AMD, 'least for desktops... the only people they'd be underselling would be themselves = do them no good

for servers/workstations AMD makes sense, cut the price of a server significantly by going AMD

that's my 2 cents

AMD now runs much cooler.
They've capped off their hottest running line - Athlon 64 FX - at 89 watts. That means that no new A64 will go above that until they change their policy. Currently, it's more like 50-60 watts.
Intel is currently sitting at, what? 110watts?
That's a big deal for Dell.
edit: looks like prescotts will be pushing 120 watts at 3.6.
Also, AMD's opteron and Athlon 64 lines are the only ones to support NX in windows XP SP2. The only other processor is the intanium. Intel's x86-64 processors will not support it (it's one of the few changes they made to their implementation of the spec) This is a HUGE security flaw in Intel's processors!

Does Dell components division have any tie-in to their prebuilt computers division? Until Dell is selling prebuilt AMD systems under the Dell name, who cares. Dell selling a few Opterons on the side isn't going to have any financial effect on AMD. They're probably not even getting the CPU's straight from AMD.

Agreed. Let us have our fun!

None of the links work now (except for Brandon's), so could somebody please say what the other links lead to? I assume they were for single opteron and athlon CPUs, but I'm curious to know which ones.
