Its probably an intestinal blockage. A festering mass of feces and hair stuck in the large intestine. The intestinal lining will burst, spilling feces and a cornucopia of bacteria in the abdominal cavity eventually leading to sepsis.

OR, it could be constipation. Eat more fiber.

i hate it. the pain comes in waves that progressively get worse until you release the pressure or until it clears up on its own *somehow*

My suggestion would be to chug a bottle of A1 Steak Sauce.

I hate IBS. The best route that I've found, unfortunately, is to avoid "releasing" the material in question - basically let the stool build up and just clamp down and suffer through the waves of pain. This allows the stool time to solidify, so that it's less of a mess when it comes out, and it avoids dehydration. That was a huge problem for me for a long time, was that I would let it go as soon as I got the waves, but then I would get dehydrated as well. Been feeling much better once I learned to hold it in for about half a day, then just defecate normally.
