No, 2000 was the enhanced version of Windows NT kernel designed for workstation/server platform. ME was based on 95/98 code so it's completely different. XP is based on Windows 2000 code...so basically XP is as old as Windows NT itself. The World needs new kernel...something that occupies less memory and does more job but they simply couldn't do it. That's why they split new kernel and features into different OS's which became longhorn and blackcomb/viena/win7 etc.

Vista is the best OS for Desktop PC's- not XP. The most up to date version with good security, reliability and new features.

I feel sorry for all deluded vista haters.

And why would this suck for Vista buyers? Vista works great for me. I honestly am not worried about a new OS coming out. I'll buy it if I want it when it does, whether it's next year, 2010 or 2011. I'm not one of those consumers that thinks the world needs to grind to a halt just because *I* decided to spend my money. If this sucks for Vista users, I'd hate to be an Apple buyer. 8GB iPod touch, 32gb iPhone, macbook refreshes, etc. They have no problem improving products at the same price point with no warning to the people who just spent their money on the soon-to-be phased out model.

I think I'll be using Vista still,its going to have to something special for me to upgrade from Vista when its released,also we don't know what state bug wise it'll be in when it does get released.As to XP I have retired that OS,it has had a good run but I have no need or use for it since Vista arrived on the scene.

There was a clarification on Gates statement from Microsoft. I think I found it on Slashdot, you can go look for it if you want. Anyway, it said what Gates meant is Windows 7 betas will be out in mid-2009. So my guess is (and I can't remember if the article implied this) that if betas do happen mid-2009 that we will see a final in mid-to-late 2010. At least, IIRC, Vista went about a year from their first real beta till the final release.

Isn't kind of silly to be upset about your OS being out dated within in 2 years? Thinking of those who have Vista and according to some it was a waste of money because Windows 7 is coming out possibly next year or the year after.

I know the $900 I spent on hardware was out dated within 2 months of me purchasing it. I spent $109 on Vista HP x64 and it is going to last for 12-36 months before it's replacement is out. Well that $109 Vista out lasted my $900 in hardware by at least 10 months, I'm guessing more.

I wonder what kind of system Windows 7 will need to run decently, even with the small'ish gap between Vista & 7, assuming the 7 beta will really be out in 09. Somehow MS is going to have to bloat the hell out of it, will be nice to see an OS that will probably choke with even 1 gig of memory.

I honestly don't know why anyone thought that Bill Gates could honestly give an accurate time frame on Win7 given its features aren't even finalized yet and he will be retired in less than two months.
