well i've run into a problem. i can't decide between the dell or the gateway. the gateway has better specs, but i would have to pay roughly 150 more for it. i don't know if a 300:1 better contrast ratio and an 8ms response time vs 12ms, is worth the money. please if i can get any feedback it would be great.

The other thing you have to consider is that fact that the Gateway has HDCP support for that DVI connection which means that it will work with Windows Vista and set top HDTV boxes.

I just ordered the Gateway 21" monitor and I'm getting it shipped to my door for $618. I also went to BestBuy this weekend and they are selling them for $599 plus tax.

Awesome, let us know what you think of it!

From the specs it really sounds like the Gateway is the better monitor overall (and I say this as a 2005FPW owner). Especially having HDCP and Component support is really nice...I still haven't seen any reviews of it though.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Gateway's response time is listed as 8 ms G to G and Dell's is 12 ms the old fashion way. They could be equal.. or the Dell could be better than the Gateway on observed response time..

True, you can't always trust manufacturers' response time claims. That's why I really wish someone would do a formal review of this monitor.

i appreciate all the feedback so far. as this is very important to me. there is a 200 dollar difference between monitors(650 for gateway and 480ish for the dell). i've been reading about the 4:3 aspect 19 inch ones, and the only thing detering me from those is that the 20 inch dell is like 50-100 more. i also continue to hear about vista compliant. i'm going to start reading more on this, but if anyone could give me a brief breakdown of why the gateway will work, but the other won't with vista, it would be greatly appreciated. it's hard to think ms will make an os that won't support monitors that r already out.

MS will still support it. What people are talking about is HDCP. If your monitor supports it and you try to play some type of media that has HDCP then it will play in all of its HD glory. If your monitor does not support HDCP then Windows ( or any other HDCP media device ) will down sample the video and then send it to the display device.

Example:

I try to play a 720p movie that has HDCP on my 2005FPW that does not have HDCP. Vista will downsample the video to 640x480, as opposed to 1280x720, and then send that to my 2005FPW.

For me this will not be an issue because I will be playing HD media on my HDTV that I have yet to buy. I don't like watching movies on my PC so I did not care when I bought my 2005FPW. But if I could have had HDCP for an extra $50 I might have bought it.

I'm guessing that the Dell monitor is using a Phillips IPS panel, which is why the contrast ratio seems lower than the Gateway. The Gateway specification lists a S-PVA panel is being used. This is a Samsung panel. I'm going to assume that it must be using some sort of overdrive circuitry in order to get this panel in the 8ms G to G range (keep in mind that this means a 16ms full cycle response time, because folks decided to only report half the cycle when they listed grey to grey times).

Samsung's LTM2102M2 panel specs

a. thank you for the info on hdcp. i as well won't be playing media on my pc, as that is y i have a samsung dlp. on the other hand, if i do decide i "need" to play it on my pc, it will be that time again to either upgrade my pc, or just get a new monitor, either way it's something i will deal with when i get to it.

b. thank you for that quick rundown on the the gateway. so essentially(even tho it says 8ms), its really a 16ms vs the dell 12ms? that's what i'm getting from what others have said, and if that is the case, the dell seems to be a better choice for me.

lastly, is grabbing the dell off ebay for 470ish shipped to me worth it? or does anyone know of any other current good deals? i've got another 2 weeks b4 i need it(thats when my new pc comes in), but wouldn't mind getting my hands on it b4.

ps-if anyone would like to trade a new dell 2005fpw for the intel retailedge bundle, send me a pm. I'm very willing to trade.

I don't know how Dell is measuring their 12ms response time; so, I'm not too sure what it means. I don't think they list a response time spec on their website, or did I overlook it?

Usually, a 12ms response time is referring to black to white and back cycle times, which are usually the fastest the panel is capable of; so, I wouldn't necessarily conclude the Dell was really faster than the Gateway, just looking at the numbers.

Getting a Dell is not that bad as long as it is not a PC.

I don't know much about the 2005FPW since I have a 2001FP and 2405FPW. I can tell you that the COMPONENT connection and PiP comes in handy. I have a HD Satellite receiver connected to mine using the component connection and the computer uses the DVI. I can display 720p or 1080i using the component connection. I have another PC that also uses the VGA connection. I can have the two side-by-side or one or the other in a PiP window. You won't be able to do that with both DVI or DVI/VGA. It has to be DVI/VGA and Component/S-Video/Composite.

I believe all Dell response times are Grey-to-Grey unless stated Black-to-Black as they just use the information provided by Samsung ( or LG/Phillips for older panels ). The 2405FPW ( at least mine ) is 12ms G-to-G and 16ms B-to-B.

Well, I set up my new computer last night. I have to admit I am quite impressed with the clarity with even a VGA connection. I don't have a video card capable of running DVI yet but if this is only VGA then I can't wait to see DVI. It beats my old 19" by a long shot. The 21" is just big enough for my desk. I almost bought the Dell 24" but that would have been way too big. I am going to try and install Doom 3 to see what it looks like. Just my 2 cents.

I'm interested in a comparison as well. In Canada, the Dell list price is $749 and the Gateway is $799. Can get the Dell for less when deals are on, not sure about the Gateway. Supposedly, Dell have a new generation of LCDs on the way, so might wait.
