Hi,

I am another interested in rails. Way back to original mitrandir and slugger threads somebody reported that eather HP server or office PC have excectly the same rails, but I was never able to find similar ones. Now got scsi drives and need the rail soon. Any ideas there?

Just when you think this thread is about to die....

I noticed that some of you are successfully using a Maxtor/Promise ATA-100 IDE controller in this system. I have one and have had no luck getting it to work. It detects the attached drive properly, but hangs just when the OS is about to launch (from the SCSI drive.)

I've done the following:

1. Updated ATA-100 controller to newest firmware.
2. Disabled all unused devices on motherboards (COM ports, LTP port)
3. Disabled unused SCSI port on motherboard. (The only SCSI device I'm using is the hard drive.)
4. Moved and tested the ATI-100 controller in different PCI slots. (It's the only PCI add-on device in the server.)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this thing to work?

In case anyone is reading still... is the mobo a standard ATX size? Can I drop it into the standard AntecSX1040 case? (or any other ATX case for that fact)?

Yeah. But, wouldn't it be nice it this weren't the ONLY place on the entire internet where you could find people actively working with the Gateway 6400? <sigh...>
...It detects the attached drive properly, but hangs just when the OS is about to launch (from the SCSI drive.)
  • Does the ATA-100 controller work in another computer?
  • What OS are you booting from on the 6400?
  • Have you setup the two HD booting parameters in the Gateway BIOS? (They CHANGE by themselves every time you add/remove a drive, possibly even moving to a different PCI slot - I don't remember).
  • If you're not already, try installing a fresh copy of something really simple like Win98 and see what happens.
If you read past messages, I didn't have trouble getting the ATA-100 card started, but, large file copies would "stall" until I changed slots. But, now, once I got it going, I can put it back into the "problem" slot and it works fine - go figger'...

Good Luck...

Chumster -- The motherboard is an Asus CUR-DLS, so I believe the answer would be yes. Though I personally wouldn't think of doing this. The case is actually the component I like most about this server. (Nice SCSI controller, too.)

It's nice that ppl are still reading the stuff in this thread...

Does the ATA-100 controller work in another computer?

Yes. Every box I've tested it in.

What OS are you booting from on the 6400?

Win2K, but it's not even getting to that point. It hangs right after it displays the CD-ROM model on screen, and right before NTLDR starts.

Have you setup the two HD booting parameters in the Gateway BIOS? (They CHANGE by themselves every time you add/remove a drive, possibly even moving to a different PCI slot - I don't remember).

Yeah, I've noticed that. Pretty screwy. If I remember correctly, my SCSI drive doesn't show up under "Hard Drives" when the Maxtor ATA-100 card is installed.

Which slot is your ATA card installed in now?
Is your SCSI hard drive listed in the BIOS under boot devices?

Thanks for responding.

Good - hardware OK, firmware update didn't corrupt it.

May be a problem - Win98 would be better, for testing/setup.

THAT'S your problem - IT SHOULD! Sometimes these "crazy" PnP cards "remember" what IRQ they used last time and won't change unless forced. Your ATA-100 might be fighting with your onboard SCSI. Disable the onboard SCSI, create a small 2GB Primary partition on the IDE connected to the ATA-100 and try to install Win98 to C:. If that works, re-enable the onboard SCSI and see what the BIOS and Windows "see". Something to do with "forcing" a PnP BIOS to re-configure to talk to a PnP OS. It'll work, probably easily if you format and start over, but other folks here have gotten it work, some with even TWO ATA-100 cards!
Which slot is your ATA card installed in now?
2nd from the top. Was in the 3rd, then msgs from this thread had me move it to the top. I had my AIW128 in the top and my SB16PCI in the bottom. Now, while I'm reloading all OSs [Win98, WinNT4 Wrk, WinNT4 Srv, Win2K Pro, Win2K Srv] onto the IBM SCSI, I only have the ATA-100 plugged in, all onboard devices active except the 2nd SCSI controller.
Is your SCSI hard drive listed in the BIOS under boot devices?
YES!

Thanks for responding.
You are very welcome - it'll work - just keep trying, sometimes you have to start over from the beginning...

I *LOVE* THIS GATEWAY 6400 CASE!!!

I have ~10 computers here on my LAN right now. Most were built by me, with the razor cuts from the unfinished case edges to prove it! Most of them make it a REAL HASSLE to change HDs, etc... - this 6400 sideways-mounted cage with plastic rails is heaven! (just wish rails were easier to get) It figures that the BIOS and onboard IDE controller SUCK (just to balance things out!)

But, eventually, it'll become my new PVR, MP3 player, file/print/MP3/MPG server, if I don't die first...

I actually like the aesthetics of the case, but those speed adjusting fans are driving me bonkers!! As my primary gateway/File server/etc, it's one of my only PCs to remain on 24/7. Any time a PC on my LAN touches a file on my internal IDE (I'm using a Promise IDE controller BTW), those fans speed up. Does anyone know if this is the powersupply, the case fans or the CPU fan?

Seeing how there's so much discussion about PCI IDE controllers, I'll give you the details on what I'm using:

Type: Promise Ultra 100 TX2
Slot: The 32/64-bit slot (#3?)

Maybe it's the specific card, or perhaps I just go lucky, but I didn't have a single problem. I currently have both the internal CD-ROM and a WD60GB (7200RPM) drive attached.

[Edit]
PS. If I change cases, I'll have about 3 rail sets that I could sell

Hello all.

im trying to do this

4. From "highly tech forum"--built-in SCSI default mode is NON-Sync, so included IBM U160 HD runs at 12 MB/sec. Press Ctrl-C during boot when prompted and change SCSI setting to Sync160 for the hard drive. The sustained data rate would increase to approx. 25 MB/sec (that IBM HD is really not "latest&greatest")

after i press ctrl-c i dont see any options to turn on Sync for scsi.

can anyone help me out here?

and for those who installed a video card did u ever get the onboard video to work at the same time for dual monitor??

Thanks!

I'll agree that's it's not very intuitive - after you press ctrl-c, you have to select the appropriate scsi controller and then select device properties - THEN, it will scan the devices attached to that controller and allow you to adjust the individual transfer rates. Play around - you can't hurt anything - you can always ESC out...
and for those who installed a video card did u ever get the onboard video to work at the same time for dual monitor??
I've gotten my AIW128 to display/record/playback etc... but, although I plan to try, I haven't run dual monitors yet - [I've been having so many other problems, that dual monitors was the LEAST of my worries...]

BUT, talking about video (and fan speeds!), has anyone else noticed how SLOWLY Windows Explorer opens paths? (amongst other things while the CPU fan speeds up)...

Thanks !! ClearToLand i found that menu/settings. I think mine is set to sync160 allready. cuz i see MB/Sec at 160 MT/Sec at [80] Data width [16] etc......

i got a ATI workin in the mahine its a 3D rage Pro PCI. not any better then the on-board =) but just wanted to try out dual monitor. BUt after the Rage pro is installed... the on-board video doesnt want to work at all. Within the device manager it just shows the video with an exclamation mark. and this error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Thanks!!!

Genashe,
Did you do the following:
1) During Windows2000 setup "Press F3 (or whatever) key to specify additional SCSI/RAID adapters" ? Win2000 does NOT know about this particular controller. It will NOT run without drivers :-(
2) Bios boot setup--did you specify that this should be the 1st drive to boot from?

I learnt the "hard way" that each time I change HD configuration (add/re/move HD) this damn thing will reassign the 1st bootable HD :-(

Pinkpig,
The only way to run dual monitor is to have 1 AGP and 1 PCI card... ...Ok, I lied, you can try to mess around with ISA video
But GW does not have either AGP or ISA, so no dual setup here--onboard chip is disabled once add-on video is installed and there is no workaround for this :-(

Thanks to "Hot Deals" I got enough EIDE HDs to put SCSI to rest. I removed the 9GB drive, removed front fan--OMG!!! it's so quiet now Disabled SCSI in BiOS--Sux2000 boots much faster now

Hi Everyone - I just started adding disk drives to my GW 6400 and started looking for rails - same as everyone else! I saw this thread and remembered that someone had done a do-it-yourself guide for making rails. After an hour of searching my old emails, I found it. For the life of me, I cannot find the name of the guy who originally posted this - so I am not blatantly ripping it off and trying to pass it off as mine - no flames, please!

Also I found another thread that mentioned that the rails were the same as HP Vectra/Kayak rails - and I found someone who sells them, but they don't look like the "real ones". Whether they work or not, I might willing to gamble $7.50 for a set of each - they won't lock - but they looked like they could fit the slot...

Mods, I know this isn't exactly a hot deal, but it does
pertain to the huge gateway deal that everyone got in on -- pls don't
lock it up.

Well, yesterday night (friday) I give gateway a call to
order those plastic drive rails. So I get directed to "Business Addons
Dept.". They had gone home for the weekend and nobody else wanted to
talk to me about it. So, I'm mad -- I got this whole weekend set aside
to setup my 6400 and its bust. So I call my local gateway stores
and they don't have them (actually, they don't have stock of anything). So
I read that you can use HP Vectra/Kayak drive rails so I call up
everyone I know and all those pesky compusa style stores. No luck. So I
tell myself: these things are so cheap, I bet you could make them
out of cardboard. I knew the only problem would be finding a piece thick
enough. As luck would have it, the flaps on the top of the 6400
server box are just the same thickness as the rails (and they have some
good tape to hold shape well). I've got it down to a pretty easy
method now:

1) get those purple guides off the side of the lower
5.25 inch bay. this will also work with the ones on the scsi drive, but
the purple ones are better because they are flatter.

2) keep the white side of the cardboard facing up and
place one of the drive rails on top. push down on the metal piece on the
drive rail until you can see slight indents in the surface. place the
drive rail down and grab a knife (x-actos are always good and sharp, but
any steak knife will do), use it to punch two holes into the cardboard
where the indents are (it should go all the way through). turn the
cardboard over and make sure the hole on the other side is well defined.

3) place the drive rail back on the white side of the
cardboard and push the metal piece into the holes such that the rail
stays connected to the cardboard. take your knife and cut a guide into the
cardboard as you go around the drive rail. this should just cut the
surface but wont go all the way through to the bottom. remove the drive
rail and cut the cardboard out with a pair of scissors -- cut into your
guide, this will keep the scissors aligned.

4) get a jumbo paper clip and straighten it out. now,
bend one end and stick it into one hole you made in the cardboard. bend
the other end so that it fits into the other hole you made in the
cardboard. then use a pair of wire cutters (sometimes scissors or just
bending back and forth will work) to cut the pieces of the paper clip
sticking out of the bottom of the cardboard such that they are around 1
cm (just make sure they are at least as long as those of the original
purple guide).

5) If you used the left drive rail to make the first
one, use the right drive rail to make your second one (or vice-versa).
Just repeat the steps above to finish of a pair.

I didn't need the purple drive rails for a 5.25 inch
drive, so I used them for a hard drive. They don't lock the same way as
the ones made for the hard drive, but the drives don't move at all after
you slide it in (and of course its blocked by the door of the computer).
So, I only needed to make 2 pairs of cardboard rails (I needed rails for
3 more drives). I hope this is clearly written and helpful, but if you
have any questions post them here or pm me.

I'm planning on trying this - anyone else who does this, please post the results, improvements, etc.
Also, if anyone tries out the HP Vectra/Kayak rails, please report on that.

Hey Gang [time for a new message to keep the thread active ]:

Several times now, I've shutdown my 6400 and gone to bed only to find it up and running again the next day! :Q

In the BIOS, I have ACPI=No and Power Management = Yes. Today it happened with Win98SE, but I have NT4W, NT4S, W2KPro, W2KAS all loaded, so, except for it being impossible with the 2 versions of NT4, the other times could have been W2Kxx.

Ideas anyone???

I had an auto-start also.
But I had no hard drives connected ,I was troubleshooting (late into the night, morning).
I thought maybe it was my fault.
At least I do not feel like aliens are invading and messing with me,mentally.
what little is left to mess with.

Some machines automatically turn on when power is applied....could you have had a power surge at night that triggered the machine to turn on?

Thanks, but, no - all my machines (and my TiVo ) are plugged into UPSs. Weird, huh?

Anyone come up with a solution for the video/scsi controller conflict? I had a MX200 card in the #1 slot that ran with no problems. I swapped it for a MX420 and the system won't boot (doesn't recognize the SCSI controller). I messed around with it for a couple of hours, tried every PCI slot and disabled a bunch of stuff in BIOS but no go. I finally broke down and called Gateway to see if they had solved it with a newer BIOS, etc., but they basically told me to get hosed because they don't support add-on video in the 6400.

No. So, what did you try to say a few days ago???

Since I'm here now, I have another 6400 question - remember that previous post that noted the rising and falling speed of the cpu fan? (I use it as an audible indicator that the cpu is doing some work.) Well, I removed my AIW 128 PCI and am using a "minimal" setup to test out OSs and applications on the machine (was ATA100 controller & SB16 PCI - just added 56K modem yesterday). When in Windows Explorer, whenever I click on a '+' in the left panel to open a subdirectory, there is this "pause" that I don't have of any of my other machines (they just immediately open). I "think" the AIW did this too.(?) Happens under all MS OSs.

Similar question (but unrelated to the 6400) - on my Dell Dimension 4100 w/Win2KPro, click on the '+' to open any Network Neighborhood "object" drives the cpu utilization up to 100% and "locks up" the machine until the object opens. All of my other machines open immediately. All machines are using Netbeui and TCP/IP, with TCP/IP only bound to the NIC and/or modem for security. My only idea is to re-install all of Networking (drivers and protocols).

I just a rank novice, but I got hardware scsi raid running on my GW 6400. I found a great deal on ebay last year for a Mylex extremeraid 1100. It works perfectly. Its still fully supported here is a link.

http://www.mylex.com/support/productgd/matrix.html#acc-dac

I was able to fugure out how to install, update the bios, and configure it quite smoothly.

My os is Win 2k server. It's just a small business office (8 workstations) file, internet, print server.

I think I found out about htis card in the hotdeals forum.
