Well I guess all those rumors about Gateway upgrading the M68xx series ATI 9600 video were a bit off:

Gateway 7422GX Product Page

Looks like they downgraded the video to an ATI 9550 and left it at the same price point as the model it replaced (7405GX).

I knew when Gateway bought out Emachines it wasn't a good thing, but I never expected them to take an excellent machine (M68xx) and actually make it less capable. After spending a year letting the rest of the industry catch up and pass its impressive specs, I just can't see the rational in downgrading its video capabilites. But thats just me.

The models previous to the 7422GX had the 9600. That sucks, but oh well. Guess you just have to buy a Thinkpad

::sigh:: stupid gateway. Actually, I was hoping I could take advantage of my Best Buy PSP and swap my 6805 with another PC when something actually BETTER came along. Guess my 6805 isn't gonna be beat anytime soon by a BB lappie. And before anyone accuses me of fraud my M6805 does have some problems:
1) Cracked hinge
2) Screen changes brightness randomly
3) lappie restarts when I plug in the power cord when it's already on.

Connoisseur - They might try to get it repaired first. If not, you can get a product of equal value (the price you paid), so you can get another lappy, just not this one

Considering it has more memory to start, this model should rock! Someone over at notebook forums took a look at the machine and the 9550 is still a 9600 (with the same clock speed). Maybe there was a typo in the specs listed.

Take it in for repair. You might get lucky and have your machine replaced with this new model. If not, then at least the repair will count towards your no lemon limit.

I was at Best Buy looking at this model to see if it was anything I'd be interested in. When I went to the device manager, it still listed the GPU as a Mobility Radeon 9600/9700, and I've seen other forums where people state that the clock speed of the 9550 and the 9600 between the 7405GX and the 7422GX are exactly the same. Why they're called by different names I'm not sure. But even on the desktop models, the 9550 is just an underclocked 9600. The same is true most likely with the mobilty version. Not much to worry about, especially when you're getting a gig of RAM and a DL DVD burner. This little thing has me very impressed.

Me too! So much so that I went in to Best Buy looking for a PNY 6600 GT card and came out with this laptop instead ;-). I have the Black Friday Toshiba (M35x-S109 my first laptop ever) and I was messing with the idea of swapping out the combo drive for an NEC 6500a ($165 for drive + $45 for installation @ local computer shop=$210+tax), plus I had already put in another ram SODIMM(256mb @ $50), and I added a necessary 802.11g wi-fi card ($30) sooooooo...... I figure that I already spent $580 for this one and I would have been up to $800 if I had swapped the drives. In comparison, this one was $1250 (after $150 instant rebate this week) with another $70 in BB rewards (after $10 sign-up) later. This price got me a MUCH nicer screen, a better CPU (in my opinion), twice the HDD capacity, a dedicated GPU, a Dual Layer Dual Format DVD burner, 1GB of ram (with none shared for graphics), and integrated 802.11g plus various other niceties like integrated card readers.......I am a happy customer! Now that I dissed my other laptop is anyone interested in it so that I can pay for this one :roll:.

i'm not sure thats correct. i know that for desktops, the 9550 is basically a slower clocked 9600. something like 250mhz vs. 400mhz. i dont see why in laptops, it would not be the same case.

you have to look at it this way. the downgrade of the current model is an upgrade for the previous model. so all the people who have previous generation models got a free upgrade. that's what i call service.

i love gateway.

Thats like saying that building crappy cars now makes the older ones less crappy.... thats crazy ... but eerily makes sense.

Turns out it is the same video card as the m68xx series before it. It is a slightly underclocked 9600. 9600's should be at 350 mhz core, where as the 9550 in this model is 298mhz. I guess the m68xx series was the one with the typo. Just like the other models, you can always overclock it to achieve maximum potential using ATI Tool

Does anyone think Gateway will be brave enough to produce a Turion64 notebook when AMD releases the technology?

CompUSA had a special sale today on their pc's (cost +7%) and I picked up Gateway 7410GX at CompUSA. After a $250 rebate, it ends up being $820.

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=316555&pfp=BROWSE

Comparing it to the 7422GX, I wonder if it's a good deal or should I wait til when the 7422GX is on sale?

The differences of 7410GX vs 7422GX:
1. 256mb vs 1gb (I have a stick of 512mb PC2700 sitting around, so I can get it up to 768mb)
2. 60gb hard drive vs 80gb hard drive
3. Athlon64 3000+ vs Athlon 3400+ CPU (both have 1mb of L2 Cache)
4. no media reader vs 6-in-1
5. DVD/CD-RW vs DVD-RW/CD-RW
6. 9600 vs 9550 graphics (possibly a difference)

Would these difference be worth waiting for the 7422GX to go on sale again for $1250 vs $820, a $430 difference? Thanks for reading

Damn that's a sweet deal at CompUSA, but I still say hold out for Turion64 (PCIe support and hopefully better battery life).

They probably will! eMachines used mostly AMD CPU's in their notebooks (I can't remember if they had a Celeron or not) and now Gateway has done the same. It depends how much Intel will pay them to keep the Pentium M in their thin n light's
I can't wait to see specs/benchies on the Turion, it looks VERY promising. Pentium M battery life with Athlon 64 performance? :Q :Q :Q
