what do you guys think? it has a 9800m gts with 1 gb ddr3 memory video card. can anyone else find a better priced gaming laptop with a high end video card?

For that price, that's the best you'll find. At least until Mobility Radeon 4000 series comes out. That laptop was $100 off ($1050) only last week by the way. Sorry to bust your bubble. It's still the best value gaming laptop at that price point though

MPC (gateway) has filed chapter 11. They are cutting back greatly on support and most in the industry are forecasting them to be gone entirely. I wouldn't spend that kind of coin on a Gateway right now.

Google it.

Gateway "consumer" is owned by Acer, a rather largish company. Gateway "Pro" (business and government) was sold to MPC in Nampa, ID. Gateway Pro, formerly MPC, is who filed chapter 11 and will likely be dissolved.

In conclusion, the Gateway models from Bestbuy and other retailers are, in fact, Acer's.

Gateway was acquired by Acer and Gateway Pro (business, government and such) was then sold to MPC computers.

In October 2007, Gateway was acquired by Taiwan-based Acer Inc., and the combined entities now comprise the third-largest PC company in the world.

Look here and it states;

Gateway Press Release
Gateway has sold its Small Business, Mid & Large Business, Government and Education operations to MPC Corporation as of October 1, 2007.

Then you can look here to get the details of the following;

Delaware Bankruptcy Litigation
MPC Computers, LLC, formerly Gateway Computers ("Gateway, or the "Debtors"), filed for bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Thursday, November 6, 2008.

So our Gateway consumer notebooks are backed by Acer, a solvent company, so we should be OK.

That is the best you can do for now as far as price. The early shipments had a screen res of 1920X1200 but later reports are that most are now getting the stated 1440X900. You might still find the higher res out there but they are getting scarce.

sswilson is got the right scoop!!! I own this gateway laptop. It's better than my dell .
